dead battery?

bad stator?

bad voltage regulator?

wiring fault?

try charging the battery, see if it holds a charge, if not, it's dead.

on a (newish) XB, there's liable to be a reason for the death, however . . .

not much help, I know, but not much to go on for a remote diagnosis

Start the bike and and put a volt meter on it.You'll be able to find out if its the stator real quick.

You definitely want to use an external charger to recharge the battery. The charging system in any vehicle may be able to charge a dead battery, but it isn't designed to and may be damaged or excessively worn. Charge it before trying to use it.

Buds right. I had the same problem over the winter. Buy a trickle charger and charge the battery for about 24 hours. Mine fired right up after I charged. If that doesn't work you might have to buy a new battery.

sign, if you'd described the failure mode a bit more completely, we'da suggested the trickle charge first -- you're likely fine after ya charge it back up . . . .

oh, and don't forget to take you key with ya ;-}

i didn't describe it fully because i was freaking out
running from the computer to my bike yelling
"Not going to able to ride my bike this weekend sucks"

my wife probably now regrets getting the thing for me

thank you again everyone

this board kicks butt

I uh, someone I know killed a voltage regulator by jumpstarting from an idling car. There was some hollering involved there as well. If things still aren't right after charging, check it out.

Its a full loss shunt type charging system, the voltage regulator actually does *less* work if the battery is dead.

Also, a carb'd bike without a battery, or with a dead battery, will run like crap if at all. A fuelie would probably be dead in the water. Thats why the trickle charger is helpful.

The Harley battery is actually a very good, very sophisticated battery (absorbed glass matt) at a reasonable price (for a premium battery).
