So I've been having an on going issue with my 2009 xb12r for quite awhile. It has around 20000 miles on it.

It seems when I first start the bike and go for a ride, it works alright. But after awhile when its warmed up it begins to bog or choke out around 4000 rpm under heavy acceleration, and happens in any gear. Sometimes it gets so bad that even cruising around 3000 rpm it will begin to bog out.

I have replaced the TPS, IAC, and Plugs and Wires. When I replaced the TPS, it seemed to work good for about 50 miles or so, then started acting up agian. Same with the IAC.

I did have a rough, bouncing idle when it was cold, but after replacing the IAC it seems to have fixed that.

One thing I noticed tonight after testing the new IAC, was that when I have a full tank of gas, the bike works really good. but when it gets to about 1/2 tank and lower, I noticed it would begin to bog out under load. When it got closer to empty (1/4 tank or lower) it would bog and choke out even while cruising. With the bike still warm, I filled up the tank and it begun to work really good again.

What could cause the bike to start losing power and bog out due to having low fuel? (its not empty or anything and the low fuel light doesn't have to come on)

I would Check your fuel pressure. I don't know why it would change, this has me intrigued. But that will get a good baseline. And help verify what your seeing with the tank level. If its 50 PSI when full then 30 PSI at half a tank you know your fuel pump has something funny going on.

That does sound like a pump issue, might be worth pulling the pump and replacing the pickup screen and the filter. Also check the drained fuel for debris.

Ill have to wait until I get a little more money to pick up a pressure gauge. But thanks for the ideas. I haven't looked into it yet but roughly how much of a job is it to pull the pump and replace the pickup screen and filter? or should I just wait until I can verify it with the gauge?

Also if the pump does prove to be bad, are there any alternatives for a 2009 model that may be a little better and/or cheaper than stock?

I know Personally the airtex kit for an 03' v6 mustang is awesome, for 110$ you get everything besides the inline filter.
I do not know if that will fit your year It should though. I guess if you cross reference the part number for your year for the pump and another known year(mine is an 05 xb12scg).

I think the 08+ have a slightly different pump, and there should be an airtex number in a post in here.

Well I'm confident to say the problem is the fuel pump... It died on me today while driving. I can barely hear the pump turn on and it is very weak sounding, And the bike will not start.

Ill take a look around the forum, but if anyone knows the right part number for an alternative pump for a 2009 model I'd appreciate it. Just so I don't have to second guess myself when I do order a new one.

If the pump is a walbro 521 the 03 stang pump will work...the airtex kit has the same exact walbro pump.

Just did some googling around, it looks like the 08+ pump units are different (they use the accordion hose instead of black fuel hose, and are orientated differently) but you should be able to buy that kit same fuel pumps, the airtex kit comes with 2 pickup screens. Do yourself a favor when you take it apart and pay close attention to which wire is neg and pos inside the pump.

just a dumb idea... could it be the tank is not venting, also known as tank suck?
why does it work fine with a full tank and get worse as you burn off gas?

Just got my pump out. Pickup screen looks pretty dark as well as the left over fuel in the filter came out looking black.

So is the walbro 521 the pump i need? do you have a link to that airtex kit?

Do the pumps, filters and regulators come separately or all as a kit? do the regulators have issues or is it more just the pump etc?

The regulators are normally good. You need to get the pump out of the bracket to see the part number, definitely a Walbro pump so Airtex can cross it and you should be able to get it at Auto zone or similar place. Take the high pressure filter with you so you can compare them to what's on hand. You can get the stock prefilter and any other parts not available from American Sport Bike. If you can't get the pump locally, you can probably order a real Walbro from summit racing or several other race shops.

Anyone KNOW if any pumps in here will work on a 2008 or 2009 model year? Some say fit 2003 to 2009..but even American Sport Bike says different years not all the same from 03 to 09 ????
Not a bad price though....ANyone know?

Do not buy the Ebay pumps.
I was kicking that idea around then i just bought the Airtex kit. A buddy bought the ebay one i found out later and it died 6 months later.

The airtex comes with the Walbro 521 pump which is what you need.
The airtex also comes with the prefilter screen.
You will need to purchase the in line pressure filter sepereately as well as the orings that seal the base of the puimp assembly.
There are different part numbers for the whole pump assembly between the older and newer models but they use the same components.

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Airtex-Fuel -Pump/2003-Ford-Mustang/_/N-jk8xlZ8vcz2Z1z13tbj?it emIdentifier=820626_917405_0_

comes with everything pictured, the only thing that is different is the pump which was the walbro. I would go to autozone ask for that part and just check it out before you buy it.

If you have an air compresser you can test the regulator by putting an above metered pressure into it and seeing at what pressure the regulator stumps dumping air and instead trapping it behind the regulator.
338 kPa is 49 psi.

It worked for my 05 scg.
The pump pictured is not what i got though.
I recieved the same exact pump that came on these bikes, made by walbro.
If you go to some auto store in cancada that carries airtex as a brand you should be able to get this kit and prior to purchase verify you are in fact getting the walbro pump.

I'm sure it will, even if you have to get a cross referenced Delphi unit or AC delco I'm confident the results will be just as good.
But obviously closest to OEM is best.

Summit racing ships to Canada, or they have an office up there. The real Walbro pumps were not too much more money. The key is to find the correct year and engine Mustang and then order from an auto parts place.

Hey Fella , yeah i do still ride , but it's more like a "fix" - once you're addicted to the two wheeler , nothing else comes close!

I have good days and bad weeks - so it goes.
