2006 Uly 20K miles. Riding along the bike has a hiccup, almost the bike jumping a tooth an the sprocket. Also, when starting the bike it will start to start then hiccups and starts.
Did some research and found that the Lean angle sensor may cause this. Went to it, attached to the battery tray, gave it a wiggle and a push Heard and felt a slight click..ah ha!? not really. It still has the same problem. The other day, I was riding and the bike was hiccuping really bad and then power went down, the bike backfired and died., Started right back up and I nursed it home.
Now what???

Closely inspect the ECM for damage, specifically the connectors. It is a common issue on the Ulysses that the seat presses on the connectors and damages the ECM internally.

To add from what Froggy recommends:
Has the TPS been reset lately?
Replaced spark plugs?

Could be internally cracked wire in bundle that comes out under the flyscreen and goes under the frame, that is the most likely suspect.

It could also be a bad crank position sensor, that is the less likely (but still reasonably common) problem that could also do it.

A cracked ECM could also do it (hard to see, but if you can reproduce the problem by thumb pressure on the ECM connectors you know that's it).

+1 Froggy -- especially if you haven't relocated the ECM and you are a big guy ... it also tends to happen when the bike is hot (that's when the seat pan flexes).

Thanks everyone, I will check the ECM for damage, It is the 'race ' ecm unit. and the wiring from under the fly screen. The p.o replaced the screen with an aftermarket unit.
A friend who is a HD mechanic suggested the TPS as wetland it's probably time to replace the plugs as I don't know when they were replaced.
Back to work

Checked for damage to ecm and connections. nothing seems to be damaged, what should I specifically look for? I am going to install a piece of foam insulation between the ecm and the seat pan.

Flex the ECM connectors while the bike is running, and see if you can get the problem to appear / vanish.

Or dig out the potting on the ECM under those connectors and inspect (or just resolder) the joints.

Look at the grey connector on the Ecm for marks or rubbing.Look at the grey connector where it meets the black portion of the ecm.Is there a slight small crack along where the black ecm and grey connector meet.Have you check for codes both present and historic.

DjohnK, thanks for the pic's and the info. How do I find the codes? This is the first computer bike I have ever owned. Give me points and condensers and I can do it but this is all new.
Thanks for the help

Have you clean your throttle body.Make sure you clean both sides of the throttle plate. Make sure you adjusted interactive exhaust cable per specs and reset the TPS.IF you don't have any codes I'M suspecting the ECM. When I had and 06 ULY I cleaned the throttle body it made a big diffrence.

Here's the update, took the bike to the dealer for the Lean Angle Sensor recall. The mech also put it on the computer (he's a really good guy) and figured the TPS wouldn't reset. Ok, ordered a new one it's going to be installed later this week. Also told me about the wiring around the steering head (which is here on the forum) and the spark plug wires possibly grounding at the frame.
The interactive exhaust cable has been disabled because of the 'race only' ecm chip.
So, thats where we're at. Yes I cleaned the throttle bodies and yep, it helped...some.

I talk to Eric Buell years ago about the bank angle sensor recall. He said (I mean I said)This wasn't as big of a deal as DOT made it. They would move it on later models to the rear of bike. never had mine done never had a problem.I hope its that TPS Themotoworld.

to make a very long story short...the throttle sensor was replaced using the original part #. Apparently there was a # that superseded the old one, it fit a 2007 model. I ordered. It came in, tech said it didn't fit used the older model (new) said he looked at the wiring (BS) when I got the bike back it ran worse despite him saying it only had a minor hesitation. stuttered and backfired and died (restarted though) 3 times on my 11 mile ride home. They said it still needs more work...that is what I took it to them in the first place! sheesh

The saga continues. Currently the bike is in the hands of a friend (an HD mechanic) who is searching for the problem. He is now thinking that the 'race' ecm may be at fault? so I am now looking for a stock ecm unit to replace the race version. Anyone have a good one laying around they are willing to lend me or sell at a reasonable price?
