2008 XB12R, 25,000 miles

The 2008+ use a new Jiffy Tite clip to attach the oil lines. Keep an eye on them.

A few weeks back, one of oil cooler lines came off of the bike, about 35 miles from home. I was at speed and lucky that I didn't go down, as the entire bike was covered in oil aft of the front tire. By the way, oil is hot and burns the right leg. I coasted off the expressway and ended up a gas station. I noticed that the top oil line, going to the oil cooler, was disconnected. The retaining clip was broken. I took off another clip and walked across the street to a Cadillac dealer and they matched up the part to one they had in stock, but in a pretty blue color. They also sent somebody to get the necessary oil. After a 30 minute wait, I was on my way. Now I have to buy a Caddy in the future.

Fast forward to yesterday and the line comes off again. Oil is still hot! I pulled into a Walmart parking lot. This time the line was off, but the clip was still in place. It appears that the hard oil line has ground down some. I installed the line again and filled it up with oil. Then continued to work, without issue.

On the way home, which is 46 miles away, I picked up two quarts of oil. About 10 miles in, the line popped off again. Oil is still hot! I also realized that the cars behind me get covered in oil every time this happens. I waited 30 minutes for the bike to cool down, after burning my hand on the header pipe. I put it all back together and filled it up again. It made it home without incident.

The main issue I see is that the top oil cooler line moves a lot more than the bottom line. This vibration, I believe, is wearing the line and clip down. The worn parts can then slip past each other. I'm going to replace both of my oil cooler lines, just to be safe. Oil is hot and it is not safe to have it covering the entire bike, especially the rear tire. I am also going to figure something out to keep the upper line from moving.

Oil is hot!

Jeeze!
Is your oil cooler mounting crap in good order?
Sounds like a symptom of a loose or cracked bracket or something.

Good reason to have some of that silicone "rescue tape" on the bike at all times somewhere.

It won't solve the root problem, but it would have gotten you home. Probably. : )

Notice to all; If the clip is worn, the three slots in the fitting are ALWAYS worn as well. You MUST change the fitting and clip together as a new unit. Just changing the clip may get you home, but is not a permanent fix. You must replace both to be safe. At 30,000 miles I found 4 totally worn out fittings, 6 badly worn clips and two oil lines with notches worn into the flange on the line. Cooler lines wear first. I would inspect all 10 fittings every 20,000 miles to be safe. Plan on replacing at least 4 fittings, usually at the cooler

Does it make sense to replace all these fittings with AN style?

Thanks for this post. At 22K my engine is sitting in pieces with the tranny out for repair. Have all the oil lines in a box, guess I better take them out for a close look. Just a note, I didn't have a release tool so I pulled the clips out to remove the lines. Most of the lines were still tough to pull out.
