When I first got my 03' XB9S I had a little wiggle in the front end under hard cornering. Dave S. sold me a set of those great Pirelli Diablo tires and suggested I go to the "aggressive" suspension settings in the owners manual. The wiggle disappeared and cornering was a rock solid delight. Now 600 miles later, though I have made no setup changes, my front end wiggle has returned. Why???? tire pressure is good, my riding style hasn't changed (I ride it according to Keith Code's books style, without trail braking)..... I can't figure... Dave S., if you are out there, help!....

As the tyres wear the problem will probably re-appear just as bad as before.
We have had loads of people all saying the same thing about the S models, regardless of tyres fitted.

It may be just due to the dynamics of the bike without the fairing or because of the higher bars. The only cure seems to be a steering damper.

Matt,

Any suggestions on a damper?

Still wondering why it was "cured" for so long and now wiggles again. Front tire shows no serious signs of wear....

harley neck bearing tightness specs seem a little loose.

I would also check the neck bearings, they tend to loosen up some.

The wiggle may occur because, as Trojan said, there isn't a lot of weight over the front wheel when compared to the Firebolt. Try lower handlebars, those who have say it really cleans up the handling.

Any suggested neck bearing torque/settings beyond or different than those in the service manual?

I checked my neck bearings and they were way loose & out of spec after 2500 miles. I followed the procedure in the service manual & they came back in spec.

Hey....funny you should mention the "wiggle"! That just started happening to me in my turns(XB12S) I'm figuring it started after I put the bar end helmet locks on! Could that be because of different weight distribution????

As long as you don't have the helmet hanging off the hangers while riding probably not. Maybe, but probably not. Bar end weights are not that heavy. A big wrist watch and lots of rings would mess up the handling then as well if it did.

Never mind...Thanx....Just checked the settings! They were nowhere near what they should've been! They were set at a little over 3 lines.According to my manual (I'm 173 lbs.) they should be at 5 1/2 lines! and my rear shock at 4! Stupid H-D dealership never set it to my weight!! I'm learning...slowly but surely. (I'm one of those who can barely boil an egg!! LOL)!

Crip,
Make sure you set it up for your weight and all your gear. It's amazing how much your helmet, leathers, boots weigh!

Dave...Thanks...I did take that into consideration so it is set up for between 170-190 lbs. Bike is pretty new so don't have many accessories as of yet. just a tailbag, headlight grille, bar end locks, leather, helmet and boots. I'll check out the performance tomorrow on my way to work, if I feel it needs tweaking, then I'll bring it up a little more!

Rode the bike a good portion of the day today with the new adjustments I made. Holy Sheepdip! Just when you think it couldn't get any better! Got used to riding it with the lousy adjustments H-D made so when I did it right....It's like a brand new ride!!! LOVE IT!! (Gotta learn to read the friggin' manual once in a while)
