Odie,
I am thinking of trimming my tail down a bit. My only concern is how's the wet road driving? Do you get a lot of spray up on the back? I use to get some thru the stock tail. Just curious.

Maverick9s...
Major rooster tail action!
You will get a chance to see all water twice. Once as you roll over it and second as it comes back and hits you in the face!

Mav, don't know yet, just put it back together this morning. I'll let you know as soon as I find out. With Ivan possibly heading this way it shouldn't take long!!!

VERY NICE JOB, ODIE, I MUST ADMIT IT :-)
I especially like the way you did away with the lower lip altogether: very good machine work indeed!!
Without meaning to quibble though, I do see two problem areas.
1. I don't see a white light on the license plate, although it would be easy enough to do: just cut out a bit of the red lens and replace it with a bit of clear/frosted plastic. Perhaps you have done that already, but it doesn't show in the photo.
2. The plate seems rather unsupported, and since these plates are so fragile now a days, it won't look very nice for long. I might suggest a frame or at least a backing plate. On a personal taste note: I don't feel your little red round reflectors are up to the very high standard of the rest of the job.
On another related note, I see you have recycled the stock turn signals. I decided to switch to K+S mini signals because they are much smaller, and therefore the allow the sleek design of the tail to dominate. I also used them in front, and there, they allow the strong design element of the dual headlights come through better. I tested them for legibility before buying them: they are fine in that regard.

Gentleman, if you look closely, under the taillight is a cutaway area of the tailpiece. It looks red but it is only a reflection of the red part of the lens. The tail light lens actually has a clear area already as it is used on the Firebolts as well. All I had to do was make a nice little cutout as big as the clear lens area. Works great. I will probably support the plate a little better somehow this weekend although I don't plan on using a frame as it starts to look cluttered again. I have an idea already. I looked on Lockhartphillipsusa.com last night and they have some anodized plate hardware I think I'm going to get. I do like the reflective properties of the ones I have though but agree something else would look better. I like the stock signals........for now.......Thanks for your comments. Yours looks very sweet also; love the yellow!! The best part about it is we saved a ton of cash!!! Take care........Odie

Look close. He did clear the bottom of the red lens.

Good job. Looks killer.

Just curious, who's bar end mirrors do you have on the bike? Can you actually see images well in them or are they too small?

That looks sweet! Just FYI Buell sells the silver and graphite colored spray paint for the frames so you can get a perfect match with the tail mod. Heres a link with part #'s etc.

Buellbred: They are Cat-Eye racing Mirrors (Bicycle racing!) They work great and don't vibrate anymore than stock mirrors at speed. I'm happy with them. Go to your local Bicycle shop and take a look or order from Colorado Cyclist online.

Fanged Rabbit: Thanks, I know, I just didn't have the patience to wait. I appreciate the part numbers! I'm planning my winter mods as we speak!!!

It's been my experience that the cheese grater doesn't stop water/road sludge very well.
Lop that puppy off.

Well, rode back from Talledega yesterday and got poured on twice. My back got pretty wet from having no cheese grater but I don't think that would've stopped all of it. I'm happy with the mod and have gotten lots of good comments.

Darren, I cut the tail section with a cut-off tool (pnuematic/rotary) and then rough shaped it with a die grinder with a grinding stone.. I used my Dremel tool and a small grinding stone in the small places. After that I used my die grinder with a sanding drum and then the same thing for the dremel. I had to fill a few imperfections in the cast aluminum with some body filler and then sanded it. I spent about four hours of hand sanding to get it very smooth. I washed it with some soap, primed it and painted it. The bracket for the plate I made out of some thin guage steel and painted to match the silver. Then I sprayed clearcoat over it to match the luster of the stock support rails. It was a weekend of work, with the paint drying time etc. Saved some cash!! If you need anymore info just ask....Glad to help.....Odie
