Had the race kit installed on my XB9R, now my top end went from 140 to 125! anyone know of an 32 tooth front sprocket thatll fit my XB? or any other suitable answer. help!

The race kit calls for the removal of the snorkel. That should give a bit more high rpm power at low speeds but it should also reduce the ram air effect at 125 mph.

Why would you want to give up your low end torque for another 10mph top speed? Especially in Florida?

If everything was installed correctly and there's nothing wrong with the ECM, the race kit is NOT the problem. It makes all its power up high and should have no problem hitting the limiter in 5th gear.

And just to be nitpicky, your XB9R never hit 140 unless it was dropped from a plane. :-P

yeah, 4th is around 110. mine stops pulling at 115, sure if I had a few more miles it might slowly get up to 125+
indicated anyway...
maybe the R front end helps a bit

Why would eliminating a bottleneck to the air flow reduce the ram air effect??

I think Zen is referring to the fact that widening that intake will reduce the air's velocity, providing it's moving the same volume of air. But I have to ask:

What ram air effect?

This has been gone over before. Even racereps with true air scoops (remember that the XB series 'scoop' is open in the back - there is nothing other than the engine's thirst for air forcing air through that hole) and pressurized airboxes only show any measurable gain at well over 100mph.

Did your dealer install the race kit? If so did they reset/rezero the TPS for the new ECM? (I truly hate that description as it is 100% wrong. What it truly comprises is an ECM throttle position calibration.)

Re: Ram air... There is NO ram air effect on a Buell XB. Ram air doesn't even kick in any significant power increase until well into triple digit speeds (in mph). Even then, it is minimal. The Buell XB intake is not a ram air intake. Good grief, it redirects much of the air for engine cooling.

The Buell XB intake is not a ram air intake.
It's not that we don't know it. It's the new Buellers that may not know it.
It's the fact that Buell advertises as to having it. As long as the web site and literature says it has it, there will be confusion.

I find it somewhat unlikely that your XB9 actually ever did 140 mph. A recent Cycle World test of the XB12 showed a top speed of 132. That bicycle has a higher gear ratio (1.5 v. 1.676) and 11 more horsepower than your 9, according to the factory.
Since the race kit does not involve changing either the gear ratios or the the rev limit, it is highly unlikely that the top speed change any appreciable amount. In addition, the factory only claims an increase of about 3 hp at maximum rpm, most of the gain in is the midrange.
Actually 125 from a XB9R is a very good speed. 140 will require increased engine capacity, competent tuning and regearing. Frankly, I try to keep it under the ton on the public right of ways.

I agree with gentleman. Your XB9 probably never got anywhere near 140mph in the first place.

I bet you`d be lucky to go 120mph on that bike.

A 9R can for sure go at least 124mph if GPS is to be trusted. I did it just a few days ago, with my hard cases on. I'm not sure I was hitting the rev limiter but it was probably close, I ran out of safe road to be traveling those speeds so I let off. The GPS has a max speed hold so I didn't have to watch it, just pin it, hold on, slow down to 60 and see how high you got. I heard of someone at Bonneville last year with a stock 9R having a hard time getting over 133.

133 sounds about right, I think the 12 makes about 135. There's no reason you should top out at 125 though unless you had a head wind?

All this talk about top speed. Unless you are going to the track it really shouldn't matter too much. You aren't going to find any speed limit in the U.S. much higher than 70mph. That's why it's nice to have all the torque. : )

Well, why would you want a bike that won't make it to it's own limit? Would you want to spend a bunch of money on a track day and THEN figure out that there's a problem?

Agreed, it's just something fun to do every once in a while to test the limits of the machine just because you can. I've done it a few times, probably spent a whole 5 seconds at that speed and then drop back down. And always on remote, completely empty, straight flat roads in good condition. On my list of items to look for in a bike, top speed is near the bottom of the list. It bugs me more that the 9R gauges are ulgy and hard to read than the top speed not keeping up with other bikes.

What RPM where you at when the bike toped out at 125 mph, how long did you hold it at that RPM.

i took the snorkel out well before i had the kit installed. yes it was installed by my dealership (the one i work for), and yes the tps was reset buy the digital technician. i thought that by posting a question on here i would get a better response to my question than dropping it from an airplane, considering i get that kind of crap enough from harley guys. for those of you who took my question seriously i thank you. for the rest of you who didnt take my question seriously, i will not be coming back to this site anymore. its because of those attitudes that i ride my firebolt alone, or with other harley riders who have better attitudes about buells than most of you. thank you for your time.

Jon, not that you'll read this since you're gone and everything ... but what RPM is the limiter kicking in?

Assuming everything else has been done correctly you're top speed should be unaffected. Now if there is a defect in the ECM (or you accidentally got a map for an XB12) your RPM may now be limited.

Also, the comment about the airplane was done in jest. The reason being that the rev limiter and gearing will not let an XB9 reach 140mph, though 140mph might be indicated.

BTW, don't take life so seriously or it will beat you down.

Man what a pus! I guess reality hurts when realistic people say that their bikes don't actually go over 125 (nevermind the magazine tests). Seriously, Misato has a lot more under the hood than most of our XB9's, if he can't do it chances are you can't either. I guess I'll take the bags off sometime and do a GPS speed run to see what my race kitted 9R can do. Who wants to be it's under 130! BTW, does anyone know how much GPS can be trusted for things like this?

As far as I know my xb9r with race kit and 12 box
has no trouble touching the limiter at full tuck
without a head wind at around an indicated 138 mph. radar has shown this to be about 3 mph on the optimistic side so my xb has gone 135 mph many times and I have been pulled over at a buck and a quarter and I was not at full throttle at the time. I cannot imagine someone not knowing how fast their xb is capable of going. amazing!! well just my 2 cents
