Dealer replaced the old belt with the newer Gates version. I noticed as I rolled it backwards in Neutral, it was quiet after three feet or so then after that there was a loud chatter in the front sprocket/gearbox area. This happens with the clutch engaged or disengaged.

I always back up my bike from the driveway into the garage (about 20 feet total) every time I park it. There has always been a quiet ticking sound when I did this and I considered that normal. Now it seems the source of the sound is exactly the same just much louder. It took me by surprise kind of like when you hear anti-lock brakes kick in for the first time on some cars. It sounds like something is going to break.

I recall someone mentioning this before and I am going to have the dealer take a look, but I just wondered if anyone had any ideas about this noise and what it means. Thanks.

When I roll mine backwards I don't get any chatter but I get a LOUD squeeling or squeeking noise. This just started happening in the last few weeks. It sounds like it is coming from the front sprocket as well.

Primary chain tension adjustment, or primary chain tensioner broken?

Front squeaking or grinding from the sprocket could be 5th gear drive assembly, but I would not expect that on an XB (with no opportunity to screw up belt tension settings).

On a Tuber, you can pop out the tranny and give the assembly a detailed check with moderate fuss. You can pop off a seal on the end of the assembly (comes out the center of the sprocket) and inspect a little on all the bikes, but you won't see much.

The XB's lost the trapdoor trannies : ( so your options are limited there.

The squeak on yours wouldn't happen to be coming from the belt tensioner pulley, would it? Just something to check to see if it is a bad bearing.

My 9S does this all the time...has been for nearly 24,000 kms. Nothing has broken, and it only does it after a "healthy" ride!
Sounds to me like the belt, when hot and rolled backwards, is rubbing on the front inner belt guard. By the morning, if I roll it backwards again, there is no sound.
Just chalk it up to another one of the quirky, endearing strange qualities which keep you smiling every time you hop on the Buell.
Hey, maybe the belt is just saying thankyou for taking it for a ride?!?!

That explains the squeak/squeal. The squeal is not a problem for me because I removed the belt guards front and rear.

Take the front pulley cover off, there is another plate(shield) behind there that is held on by one bolt, if the dealer left that loose it could be rubbing against the belt or front pulley. I just changed my own belt and the service manuel talks about the belt guard rubbing, you can lossen the screws(belt guard) and push it around and retighten. Even new mine would barley rub agaisnt the back pulley when rolled backwards. Also check the two nuts that hold the belt tension pulley (idler pulley) on.

The primary chain would not be in play if the bike is in neutral. Be kinda tough to back-drive the engine while pushing the bike too eh? : )

Honu, thanks, I hadn't thought of checking that. I know the bolt you are talking about and that might be the problem. I'll check it out this evening.

I the same problem too but when I adjusted the primary chain it disappeared so I guess just check that one first before you start messing with anything else and the sound you are hearing is the chain and it's loose so try to adjust it.
