Bike has been down for about 1.5 years and I'm itching to ride again. I seem to have run into a problem when attempting to replace my stator: the stator cover will NOT come off of the stator. I've tried pulling, pushing, prying, hitting it with the heat gun, PB Blaster, etc. Here is how the bike sits currently:  Thoughts?? | ||

Once the main nut is off, the only thing holding it on should be the force of the magnets , which can seem quite strong for the first fraction of an inch of movement until the magnetic force is overcome. Maybe pieces of the stator or loose magnets(they have been know to fall off) are binding against each other preventing removal? Try to jog it left and right like your turning a steering wheel back and forth to try and free any binding. Every so often give a nice even straight strong pull away from shaft to try to remove. A good pair of gloves helps too. | ||

Tried that  I can rotate the crank fairly easily by hand with gloves. The damn thing doesn't want to separate. | ||

IIRC, I may have confused the reverse threads, tightening the crank sprocket instead of loosening. Looks like this has caused some amount of flow and binding. This is very disappointing. I have tried applying about 100 lbs of force to remove the sprocket: won't budge. I'm out of options.... help?! | ||

perhaps some threadlocker got on the splines of the shaft? I would suggest gently heating the sprocket with a propane torch till the whole thing is just a bit too ho to touch. This would do two things: Expand the opening inside the sprocket. and Soften any threadlocker. Don't go CRAZY with the heat. | ||

I know this might seem redundant but did you check the manual? It mentions on 6-16(05 lightning manual) using two bolts and what sounds like a pry bar to pull the stator off. Seems like you may have over done it in some fashion. If it just needs to slide off try putting some thing in those sprocket holes and come up with a slide hammer jig you pull it out. That way you will have some feel for whats going on over a fly wheel puller or another like method (Message edited by dwilson357 on April 24, 2014) | ||
