So while I had my bike up the stand working on the fuel pump you guys helped me figure out. I replaced the belt which was wicked loose with a new gates polychain. install went smooth, and while on the stand I spun the wheel(forwards and backwards) to check the tracking of the belt, which looked good! So fast forward 25 miles accelerating from a stop with moderate throttle grabbed second and rolled harder into it(nothing past half or even close the 3/4) I rev sky high and start deccelerating, so the rest is self explanatory really. The belt broke clean in half with no chaffing anywhere to be found. Has there been a problem with the gates Polychain belts? I understand that gates makes the HD and Panther belts they all use different compounds. Hopefully the seller will warranty me or something. | ||

Hopefully it is just a defective belt and you receive some sort of warranty. For what it's worth, I've got a couple thousand kilometres (so far) of spirited riding and occasional wheelie on on a Goodyear Falcon belt (exact same as OEM Buell belts, according to some sources). I have 50,000 miles of street riding plus about 2,000 miles of sanctioned road racing on my Goodyear belt. No problems whatsoever. Keith | ||

So replacement belt arrived broke today with 200 miles....im stumped I've been checking the belt tension periodically and everything felt good....put the old belt and flogged it hard....so im stumped | ||

So I pulled the old belt again and inspected the pulleys. I must have screwed up the "scratch test" for the chrome plating on the rear...Used a scribe this time on a series of nicks in the center of the sprocket the whole way around and they all "scratched" however no nick is bigger then an 1/8"...Im not sure that this is 100% the culprit...the front pulley was a bit rusted inside the teeth from a recent rain storm...could that play into this? I'm still now seeing why the old belt can take such a beating but these 2 new belts broke under relatively light load...I know a guy who has 30k miles and stunts his bike now with the stock belt lol | ||

Sounds like you need a refund and go with the Goodyear belt. Either that or your gates belts are getting crimped in shipping causing a weak spot. Reverse crimp is even worse. | ||

Reverse crimp is when you open the teeth correct? Ill see if they can send me a good year rather then the gates. Well see on tuesday. | ||

Yup that reverse crimp, but if you look up these belts they have a minimum radius for bending both in use and in storage. If it gets crushed in shipping to less than the storage radius it could cause a failure. This is also why we aren't supposed to twist them. | ||

I take a used one off the bike before it breaks, put on a new one, and take the old loose one and gently do the "band saw blade" loop fold without forcing anything. Then it goes in the side bag on the Uly. If I use it, it will be while the new one is on order at which point the new one is the new one and the spare will go back to short term spare duty. And I'll ride gently while on it far from home. Somebody was doing a long term test with one folded like that and under the seat. | ||

so i just ordered a new belt from American Sport Bike, it does not indicate brand, do you guys know? cost $184. so assuming it's the best replacement? '09XT 20k, original belt will be spare. | ||

Is a belt for a 2009 xb12 say the same belt size for say a 2004 xb12? | ||

Gates belts will not work on XB's or 1125R/CR. The belt cannot withstand the back bend going over the idler pulley. I think the 2009 XB12 belt is a different width than the 2004 belt. | ||

Not too many miles on my 03 style belt from American Sport Bike, but so far so good. | ||

It is an OEM belt
Depends on which model Xb. All 2004+ Xb R, S, Scg, SL, Sx all use the same size belt, newer versions of the belt obsoleted and replaced the older ones. All 2006+ XB Ss, Xt, X, XP, Stt have a similar belt but with more teeth due to the longer swingarm. 2003 models have a unique belt for only that year. | ||

Spoke to the folks at Fay Myers today, explained belt broke again, mentioned what Scarpent1 said and the guy said they would send me a goodyear belt when they receive this one. These people really are great to deal with! | ||

I plan on replacing rear sprocket prior to installing new belt, Have the bearings for the tensioner, the tensioner itself looks to be in fine condition other wise. The chain line back and forth with the 2 broken belts and the old belt looked to all be in order. | ||

So I just received a full refund from Fay Myers. I plan on buying the Falcon belt from them. Just a little gun shy. Beware the Falcon belt, as well. I had hoped the Falcon was made of the same materials as the OEM, but it turned out not to be. My Falcon belt failed not long after my optimistic post above. ~4000km on the belt. Perhaps a Free Spirits tensioner would reduce the shock load on these non-kevlar belts, and make them a viable option.
