My shop manual covers my old XB, but the stator and VR connectors look completely different on my '08 XB. Is the diagnosis the same between the old and new style?

The battery shows 12.75 volts with ignition off, 12.4 volts when running, from idle up to 3k, and 12.3 with motor stopped and ignition on. I also plugged in a new VR and obtained the same results.

With motor running and stator connectors unplugged, my multimeter shows 28 volts AC across a couple of the terminals, but only 4 volts on the others.

Would you expect a bad stator to be "semi-working," in that it outputs good voltage across some terminals but not all?

I would check your voltage regulator "rectifier" Not sure on the manual differences. But I would expect the stator isn't working. If the multimeter isn't reading higher as you rev it up then its not putting out. Haven't seen too many regulators go bad, but I would start with looking for a broken ground wire somewhere. try googling this "buellxb.com regulator" and "buellxb.com stator" I'm sure between this site and that site you will find what you need.

The vr will not put out anything when it's unplugged

It needs to have at least some load on it to function and make up the circuitry so that the damned thing will work.

If your stator ohms are bad, your stator is bad.
If your stator ohms are good and you still aren't getting voltage, the problem lies elsewhere. The vr itself, or just the older blade-style 77 connector. Loose grounds, broken wires at the steering stem, or chaffed insulation which could be almost anywhere

It was a bad stator. One of the 'buds' on the stator was burnt to a crisp. I was surprised to discover the new style stators ('08+) are single phase and 30 amps, whereas the '07 and earlier XB's used a three phase 38 amp stator. Does anyone know the reason(s) for the change? My '08 stator went bad at 33k miles; my '04 is still on the original stator at 133k miles. Maybe my '04 is just lucky, but is there any inherent reliability advantage to the older stator design?

I haven't seen any data that proves one model is more reliable than the other, just anecdotal evidence, like how both my 06s had the stator replaced and my 08 is still on the original.

There was no clear reason for the switch to the lower output system, if I had to speculate it was that it may cost less to produce, and 30 amps is still plenty for the bike and some accessories. The 38 amp system can be swapped in if desired with the matching voltage regulator.

My 08XT stator died at 35K miles.
