Just did this while installing my K&N. Runs good but haven't rode it yet. Servo motor will come out when I install an aftermarket muffler. Now I'm going out to install my new frame pucks from DaveS...........

i like the look of that. i would sure like to see some dyno numbers of a good setup with that mod vs stock xb12 box. that is what i wanted to do but was discouraged by others. "the more the airier". i dont see how more air could be a bad thing. and also. the whole point of the xb12 box is the cone inside..... not the rest of the shell right.

Correct. The rest of the box will come off when I put a different muffler on it and won't need the servo motor anymore.

I used: 5/16" -18 threaded rod; 5/16" nyloc nuts, 5/16" x 1 1/2" stainless washers. A little difficult getting the bottom airbox on and the air temp sensor wire and breather tubes all the while holding the threaded rod so the nylocs would go on but it worked and getting the velocity stack back on. Kept it short as possible on the top so as to keep the servo motor as low as possible and not wear too much on the nut/bolt. Looks like rain so I won't be able to ride it......

It looks like that's the way it should come from the factory!

How about a clear airbox?
Factory needs more accessories for the XBs, there you go.

If you guys are looking for something to make a heat mat from try those reflective windscreen covers. We have them in Aust cause it's so
F%$CKING HOT when you park your car in the sun. They retail for about AUD$10 so are really cheap to cut up.

Starter, I hadn't thought of that. Everyone here in East L.A. (eastern lower alabama) has them too. I was going to get some reflective blanket material from JC Whitney. The only thing I would worry about would be the fire resistance of the sun shield though. I'll have to look at the one in my truck this morning and see if it says anything about fire......

Oh, by the way. My airbox mod made a distinct difference!! Winds up much faster. Low to mid-range is greatly improved. Haven't checked out the top-end yet.

Try some insulator mat for car floor boards.
Keeps the heat from the transmission from coming up though the floor of a car.
You can get it at most auto parts stores.
Works well so far.

Yea Glitch, that's what I was looking at in JC Whitney. You can get a sheet to make two or three of them for about $25. I haven't looked around town here. Sounds like a good excuse to go ride!!!!

Cowtown, could you post a hardware list to mount the top to the bottom once you cut the rest of it off.

1) 12” 3/16 threaded rod
2) Rubber stoppers, 1” long, one end 3/4 the other end 1/2
2) Lock nuts
2) Standard nuts
2) Wing nuts
2) Standard washers
4) Fender washers

Drill a 3/16 hole through the rubber stoppers, sandwich the stoppers between the washers and nuts, place through breather holes and tighten.

Did you rerout the breathers to somewhere else or just leave them hanging out underneath there.

Here’s how I ran the breathers. I turned the valves so they are pointed at each other along the right side of the frame. I ran a hose between them with a T in the middle pointing down. I cut just enough hose to use as a connector to attach another T with the ends pointing down and forward. I ran a clear hose down a couple of inches past the frame so I can see when any oil collects and plugged it. I ran another hose forward and up over the rocker cover following the curve of the frame along the front and then back along the left side of the frame. I attached a crankcase filter behind the coil.

Just curious. Why would you want to disconnect the breather lines from the motor in that fashion. They are run like that for a reason.

Reason 1: The one that comes to everyones mind would be emissions.

Reason 2: It's known that placing the crankcase in a state of vacuum, even slightly, can yield more horsepower.

Tikiman1,
I didn’t disconnect anything.
As for emissions, one end is plugged the other has a filter.
I did nothing to my crankcase breather, just the puke tubes.

I hate to be the one to ask this but doesn't cutting up the airbox actually hurt performance?
That airbox was pressurized at speed and now it isn't. Also, seeing as how the actual inlet size hasn't changed, cutting the airbox won't help at the bottom end either, theoretically. I could be wrong though.
It does look damned fine like that. I'm kinda tempted to do it just coz it looks brilliant.

Ned,
Testing I've seen indicates no. The airbox cover provides the absolute best compromise bewteen meeting EPA noise limits and optimum performance. Opening up the intake tract helps performance.
