I just got my 12 air box lid for my 9s today. Before I clip it on i'm wondering if anything bad can happen with the extra air going into the engine. And i'm also wondering is it really worth pulling the snorkel out? What kind of difference in performance should I see with the 12 air box lid installed with a stock filter?

Just do it already!
Nothing bad will happen.
The new city cross has the lid, although I'll bet it has the snorkel (noise emissions) in place.
If you're that worried just put the lid on.
You and the bike will be fine!

I did put it on after work today about 2 hours ago. I was just worried about it. Don't wanna screw up my engine. Well thanks. I took out the snorkel and it just sounds kind of funny. I'll get used to it though. I bet it will sound better when my race kit goes on though. thanks Glitch

Enjoy your bike, and there's nothing wrong with being careful, nothing at all.

I would think that the XB12 airbox lid is only an improvement to feeding air smoother into the snorkel. Without the snorkel I don't think the type of lid matters.

Without the snorkel rubber can the air bypass the air cleaner and go into the engine?

fwiw I plan to keep my snorkel.

The snorkel only restricts the passage of air INTO the airbox. It does NOT allow air to bypass the filter.

Buell_zen I think you are a little confused between the inlet stack and the snorkle. To find the snorkle, stick your hand and you'll feel the rubber snorkel. To take it out take the fake tank off, remove the airbox upper, and it will be on the left passing through the frame.

That's harsh, admin. 99buellx1 does not deserve that just for a lousy LOL! Why don't you ban me or give me 99buellx1's strike. I feel bad. Sorry 99buellx1.

How many strikes do I get?

Fire..., just do a search on snorkel for Glitch's picture.

Xb9er,
I'm betting three. I'm still at a loss as to what Admin is going on about.
I'm also confused about the snorkle. Doesn't that pressurize the airbox at speed? If you remove it, aren't you going to loose power?

Bob

My understanding it that the snorkle reduces noise to pass noise regulations just like the exhaust has to reduce noise to pass EPA.
I do know that without the snorkle the intake "honk" is pretty loud at about 3,000 RPM. It kind of resonates in my helmet so I upshift or downshift to avoid it.

(Admin needs to relax a little bit)

No problems with this set up. You may want to get the K and N anyway as it will help with air flow.

When you install the factory race kit it instructs you to REMOVE the snorkel.

Snorkel and Velocity Stack are 2 different things! When you install the factory race kit it instructs you to REMOVE the snorkel.

No one ever mentions this, but upon doing it to mine this weekend I found that to remove the snorkel I had to...

Remove the air scoop so that I could pull the snorkel "down" and out thru the frame, folding the top portion in on itself lengthwise a bit. You can't just grab it and pull it up & out.

I got in trouble for initially posting the image above with pop up text of George Carlin's 7 words you can't say on television. Admin said you had a strike against you because of your response to what I posted. But since you're a sponsor you probably have immunity.

I dont think that sponsors should be immune. I didn't think that I did something wrong, it did make me laugh when I read it. Dunno, maybee that's just my thinking, not going to blame Admin or make a big fuss about it publicly. No big deal.
