I haven't been around the Buell or Motorcycles in a long long time.. and just bought a new battery.. when I had plugged it in, the Cooling fan underneath the seat just kept running and running.. And I do not have the Buell Bible at hand, I have left the Owners Manuel at home.

Does anyone know the solution to the Fan problem?

And can anyone provide me the Wiring Diagram to the Relay Starting Circuit & Fan

I may be paranoid that someone has been tampering with the Electrical System because my 6foot Snake Lock had been cut months back. Maybe they were trying to jump the bike without a key.

A Buell Firebolt may be easily stolen because the relay box it right there. One can simply place a few pins in the right sockets to have the engine controlled. But the Key Controls the ECU.

The Key Switch is able to turn on the ECU with all the Relays Removed. The Key switch may turn on the ECU without the Relays at play. But then why does is one of the Relay Boxes have a Label "Key Switch"..? That Relay Box is from the ECU, then to the Key Switch. Right?

Had anyone notice the Fan blows towards the front? I've replaced the fan once and I don't think I could have plugged it on wrong.. when the bike is running hot, cruising on the highway and the fan is on.. its fighting wind resistance too? That's crazy

So it turns out that I'm correct.. A Buell Firebolt is easy to steal and wrong to say that they wired the Key Switch to the ECU before it gets to the relays. If they're smart, starting the motorcycle without a Key is a Simple.. Check out the Wiring

Sounds like one of the diodes is in backwards or is not in the correct slot.

Ok, well I'm not sure where any of the wiring goes from/to the fan and what other components are in series with it..
So I'm going to go drive back to my home to get the Buell Bible Service Manuel..
And when I'm there I'll scan all the wiring diagrams into JPEG files for BadWeb

Edit: the JPEG are too Big to Scale down without loss of clarity and some of the Paper Schematics too large to fully scan with my scanner

the fan will run as soon as you land the leads if the polarity is wrong : (
turn the key with the polarity switched and you might loose some of the magic smoke out of all those electrical components ... like the fuel pump

The cooling fan is controlled by the ECU....
Meaning, the ECU has it switched ON
Something is wrong with the ECU

And NO, there is not a Diode in the circuit to have switched the Cooling Fan's polarity

I've got to check the Trouble Codes
I plan to Start Pegasus up.. let her run.. Till She's Hot..
and Switch Off. Maybe the Cooling Fan Will Shut Down.


A COOLING FAN TABLE
KEY OFF -- FAN ON @ 170°C
KEY OFF -- FAN OFF @ 150°C
KEY ON -- FAN ON @ 220°C
KEY ON -- FAN OFF @ 180°C

I meant if you put the positive cable on the negative battery terminal and the negative cable (ground) on the positive battery terminal, then the fan will soon backwards even with the key off because it has negative 12v dc current applied to it.

It sounds impossible, unless you replace the battery with the wrong kind that has the terminals reversed. Some batteries are like that.

You said that you replaced the battery. Did you check the terminals? Or compare it to the original battery before you put it in the bike?

You also said that your fan is now spinning backwards, blowing air forwards towards the engine. The fan connector is shaped such that you cannot plug it in the wrong way. Was the fan always like this from the day you replaced it?
If so, why didn't you adress that issue when you discovered it?
If it's been fine until now, doesn't that raise any red flags in your mind?

If one were to reverse the polarity on a dc motor, it will spin the other direction. Same as if one were to swap 2 leads on a 3 phase AC motor.

If someone was smart about trying to hot wire your bike they would only have to cross some of the 4 wires off the back of the key switch. They should not have messed with the fuse/relay box or hooked up to ECMspy and burned an new EEPROM or messed with the fan controls. That seems a bit far fetched to me...
Did you notice any tampering when or since your chain/lock was cut? Or is the fan issue new since you have changed your battery?

Please, just for me, go Czech your battery terminals/cables and report back to us with your findings so we can help you trouble shoot this wired phenomenon you are experiencing.

It's almost too easy, I must be wrong, it couldn't be this easy (Buell couldn't up this bad)..

And I'm right.. just started the bike Without the KEY..
Man did Buell up with that Design..
Thank GOD my bike hasn't been stolen and those thieves were not smart enough

I think I'm going to redo the wiring harness and place the Fuse and Relay boxes under the seat where the California Carbon Canister is suppose to be

Actually , with a live feed into any service , from your battery , into indicators or stoplight your bike , most bikes , are gone!!
Sometimes a good steering head lock is the best line of defence!

Would it satisfy you to put an inline toggle 'secret kill' switch somewhere to prevent anyone with the wiring schematic from hotwiring your bike?

A xena disc lock put my fears to rest. I feel more secure in that, cuz otherwise they can just roll it away 'stealth mode' even if they can't start the engine. The disc lock is harder to cut than a cable or chain. And fits under the passenger pillion too!


You don't have to make your bike theft-proof, just make it harder to steal than someone else's bike. ... Or make it undesirable and ugly

I thought most bike thieves just backed up a van and grabbed the target with a few guys.

Generally, chain it to some stationary object in plain sight.
NO chain/cable can withstand an angle grinder.

Old thread but I thought I'd give it a shot...

If the bike is at running temp my fan kicks on when I'm moving. When I drop below 15mph the fan turns off. It feels like this is backwards. Any thoughts?

Sounds like the comfort kit fan strategy, which I had thought was for DDFI-3 bikes ('08 - up). Didn't think it was compatible with DDFI-2 that an '07 has.

Hopefully others who know more about these details will chime in...

Well... the bike is an '07 but I had to replace the motor so it has the guts of an '09. Motor, throttle body, wiring harness, and ECM.

Yep that is normal then. Buell was able to change the fan strategy on later bikes to address complaints about it running at shutdown. Now the fan will run more while the bike is moving, and less when stopped. The fan will still kick on even while stopped if you get it hot enough, so don't worry about that.
