For an unmodified, 08 later, XB motorcycle, what and when is the "normal" cycling for the rear head cooling fan? When is it supposed to come on...and when should it shut off? How can the fan operation be checked? Is there an accessible temp sensor which can be checked or bypassed to verify fan operation? Where is it?
I've done some searching on this but can't seem to get the answers I need regarding a totally stock system. My underlying reason is because I want to verify the correct operation of my fan, as it does not seem to come on, hot or cold, even though the circuit seems fully operational...from what I can tell. Thanks for any help!

The problem is that on the 08+ bikes, there are multiple factors into turning the fan on and off, and the temperatures are different depending on what revision of ECM programming you have. Later programmings even factor in vehicle speed, to reduce the amount of time the fan is used at low speeds.

The easiest way to verify you have a functioning fan is to plug in a computer with TunerPro RT, and then use the fan diagnostic. While plugged in, you can let the bike idle and watch the temperature climb, after a certain point it will kick on automatically regardless of what programming you have.

Froggy...your talking to someone that grew up in the 60's. Tuner Pro RT? OMG! More for me to definitely screw-up. Can I do a system check by jumping wires...or something simple like that? Thanks.

If you short out the ground for the fan, yes, but in the time it takes for you to get the seat off you could plug a computer in an press the button : )

Don't you need a special cable to connect the computer to the bike with...then have to download a program off the internet or something like that?

If you unplug the temp sensor and ground it it should come o, or at least mine did.
