It's been awhile since I had my 12R but I seem to remember the cooling fan exhausting directly on to the rear shock. Is my memory correct? If so, is this something that should be taken into account if you replace the rear shock or is the heat not an issue to begin with?

Well, heat is an issue to the performance of the damper oil... I think that as long as you know of this and take it into account, you can still get the proper weight oil for the application. If it bothers you, you could get the piece from yoyodyne that shields the damper from the hot air. I believe they sell them in CF and fiber-glass
