So at low RPM's when I give it gas, it FEELS like it skips some teeth on the sprocket and then continues fine. The engine doesn't rev though so it isn't skipping. Only at around 2-4K RPM's. And only in 3rd. Sometimes it doesn't do it. Please help. Have anything to do with my exhaust being wired open??? | ||

My 2008 XB12R just started doing the same thing. I thought it might be the belt missing teeth or something, but that wasn't it. It is only in third also. I think it has to be torn apart. I wouldn't think your exhaust would have anything to do with it. I have a Drummer and the EBR ECM. | ||

My X1 used to do that with second gear. It was worn dogs on the gears. It may be worth your time to open up the primary and have a look at the gear selector pawl/springs/Rube Golberg arrangement. You may luck out and see something fixable without having to rip the entire world apart. | ||

My M2 did this for two reasons... The first time it was 2nd gear, and was worn dogs as Nate said. Fortunately the M2 had a cartridge tranny, so it wasn't insane to pull it apart and replace that gear pair. I have it reasonably well documented somwehere here. The second time was about a year after doing the 2nd gear pair, I was riding home from work and suddenly it started happening again. I finished the ride home sulking and annoyed that I was going to have to do it again, parked the bike, and noticed that my rear D220 tire had a great big strip peeled down to the threads. I knew it was worn and had a new tire on order already, but it went from "baldish" to "threads" with a big strip just peeling off. So I would be accelerating, it would go from rubber to thread and slip for a 1/4 rotation or so, then hit rubber again and catch. FWIW. | ||

Welcome to the XB/sporster transmission! Your 3rd gear dogs are worn or/and your shift fork is effed, so they aren't meshing completely. It will skip once and then the gear will pull itself in all the way, thanks to the undercut gears, and you can WOT to 4th gear. Or, you can let off the throttle, the gear will back itself over due to the rear wheel driving the transmission, it will skip again and then pull itself back under throttle. You can do what I do, skip 3rd gear until you can open the cases and replace the gear and shift fork. It sucks, I know! Just another wonderful benefit of owning a bike built by HD. |
