Happy you are healed up and you had a good friend to turn the key off to save the battery. Is your Buell all OK now too?

Wow that sucks to see, I thought you were going to go over that guardrail off that cliff.

I really liked the editing of the video with the two cameras, it helps tell more of a story than traditional crash videos.

Thanks guys..

The Buell has been at California Harley for 3 months now... they were almost done with it when they called me last week to tell me they finally removed the frame pucks and found a small dent underneath the left one, on the frame... doh! You didn't think about checking there to begin with?
Anyway, they sent a $2k additional bill to AAA, and I waiting for the phone call... that extra $2k would have put it over the "totaled" threshold, so I don't know what AAA will do now since $3k+ was already put in the bike to fix it (sub-frame, swingarm, left engine cover and shifter...). The bike really didn't look all that bad after the crash... I am sure I could have fixed it myself for a lot less than Harley, but oh well... I am in no rush I just hope this last issue gets resolved without me having to fork the $2k...

Turning off the bike gave nice closure to the video... Shut her down Clancy, she's pumping mud.

Glad you are OK, and that you didn't superman down the cliff. I was crossing the Mackinaw bridge last weekend, looking at that low guardrail, and thinking that if I endo into that thing I'm going to have a LONG fall into a cold lake. Made it easy to focus. : )

Good that you are on the mend; could have been a lot worse.

So, how big is this dent?
You don't have to replace the frame for a dent...

There are asshats that sabotage the canyon roads up in Malibu mountains by spreading oil in key places.

Will see the dent later this week... I have not seen my bike since the crash...

Reep: if I had dropped on the right of the guardrail, I probably wouldn't be here typing on this keyboard today......... pure luck.

David, it's a great thing that you lived, and were wearing full gear, which helped lessen your injuries to be sure. What Hogs said, good lesson learner for all. Was the patch actual oil or fuel? Were your tires getting low on tread? Other than your speed, what do you think contributed?

I know that road well. One of my favorite roads. The downhill view is just gorgeous coming down into Borrego. I'm a pussy when it comes to downhill, freaks me out a bit to go too fast. Love blasting back up that hill though. The thing you have to watch for going back up are the little rockslides that occur and dump decomposed granite onto the road.

Front tire was going to be swapped after that ride... it was low on thread, but not too low. It was also 103 degrees that day, and it was snake tar material on the road... and there is a groove in the middle of it, which I think I hit perfectly. I had gone down and up that road many times before... and quite faster too... I was not anywhere near the limit, but the chain of events was clearly superior to my skill.

Thanks man... I didn't look in a lot of pain because I was in shock and do NOT remember ANYTHING about what happened after the crash... I do not remember anything you see in the video post crash... I don't remember folks talking to me, the ambulance and helicopter rides, etc... nothing! I remember my front tire sliding 2 feet to the right, and then waking up in the ER.
I don't know if someone spread the slick on purpose...

Gawddamm! That looks like an oil patch. Darker spot on right as if it was a can thrown from right to left as you look at the frame.

Oil on Palomar

I can't help but think this was not an accident... that's just me but shitt. Glad you're recovering.

Thanks Slaughter!

Alright, good news, AAA paid the extra $1800 for the frame replacement... I had to stop by the Harley dealer today to sign the repair order... Here is the bike as of this morning (they didn't fix much yet, but have most of the parts):

Expected lead-time: 1 month!

I wouldn't have thought it worthwhile to replace the whole frame for that one little ding.
I've seen people ride on the street with far worse.
