How loud is it?

Admittedly, I haven't had the opportunity to hear one in person yet but from what I've read, it's not the loudest pipe on the market (good for some...not for others ; ) ) due to it's European development routes. Police there are much less tolerant of loud pipes. It's probably similar to the race pipe's loudness if I were to guess. Maybe someone else on here that has heard one in person could chime in?

Yup noise is a problem for me too which is why I still have a stock muffler on my 1050cc big bore engine. I really need it to be down around 90db at three feet and still offer performance gains before I will buy something.

Sounds like this may be a good fit for you then... TM doesn't have db data though unfortunately the last I asked them. Are you in the States?

Yup in New York. With the 1050cc kit my cycle is a bit louder than stock (XB9 muffler) and I don't want it really any louder but it would be nice to let it breath a little better. However letting it breath and keeping it quiet are two opposed forces.

It would be worth asking them to find a loudness meter and give it a try with and without the db killer. I'll track down a few meters in a bit, they aren't very expensive.

Here is a selection, they should be able to buy most of these over there through RS Components or Farnell electronics/Element14.

http://electronics.mcmelectronics.com/search?cataf =&view=list&w=sound+level+meter&x=0&y=0

The Multimeter version looks interesting since it has several other functions, but I would probably choose the Velleman. US DOT testing is specified at 3 feet and various RPM around 3000 (white wire mod?) and so that's the range that I would use to test. Not sure what the EU standards are tested at. Legal over here is somewhere less than 82db for most things and I think up to 88db for some v-twin engines.

Slightly louder would be fine, but when it gives me a headache and sets of car alarms it is clearly too much and pisses off the neighbors. If I want to piss people off, I have an exhaust in a box that will do this nicely since it is a straight perforated pipe with some packing around it to reduce some of the harshest overtones. I keep it simply because if neighbors ever do piss me off, I can fight back with the loudest thing available.

I might be wrong, testing might be at 35 feet which offers a much louder tailpipe.

Anyone making exhausts should be able to afford one, but it might only be in the 5db plus or minus range of accurate. Even so, a decent estimate would go a long way in helping sell reasonable or stupid loud exhausts, some people want the loudest thing that man can create and want to brag about it to friends.

In the end, anything that doesn't have the EPA stamp on it is illegal in the USA, doesn't matter if it is more quiet than a mouse fart.

Whenever I get it installed I'll make a note comparing it to my past pipes.

-Special Ops
-Race pipe
-Drummer

And I might have a drummer and a race pipe for sale. Haha

If you can, test it with and without the noise reducer thing.

Like Greg, I'd have potential interest (as my stock '06 begins to rust) if there were any loudness numbers or comparisons to stock available.
Otherwise, not willing to gamble $600.
I too am not interested in giving myself or others a headache every time I ride.
Maybe it's just us Uly guys, but spending many hours on an obnoxious bike is just not my thing.
And as Greg points to, the distance (and angle) the measurement is taken from the outlet is critical, as sound power decreases with the square of the distance from the source. 3 ft vs 35 ft vs 50 ft (that the SAE driveby tests use) makes a HUGE difference in the value.

I understand where you're coming from. I have an email to TM inquiring about this. I will pass along any info I can. Thanks!

Looking to do some SPL testing in the coming months...There's an SAE test specifically for this that looks to be a good place to start. Stay tuned...Thanks again for the insight on meters etc.

Looking forward to some results, even if they are rough numbers that can be used for a rough comparison.

Better flow while still being somewhat quiet sure would pep up my 1050cc kit. Not that I lack power now but it would be cool to get that little bit more out of it without pissing people off.

It's in the works, but I'm racing the cold weather's arrival and recently broke my primary cover under the clutch ramp : ( so unfortunately it may be a little while until a proper test is conducted...Hang in there though, we'll get some data before too long.

I'm also very interested in how loud the kit is and it's impact on performance. Has anyone worked out tuning for an 08+ US spec model? I've got an '09 Ulysses and would love to get away from the heavy, rust-prone stocker. Just don't want a whole lot of noise or tuning hassles.

We have a dyno plot on our site for your review.

TM offers tuning for the 08+ models either by remoting into your ECM/computer or if you send them your ECM but they charge for that.

We'll be conducting the loudness tests once Pittsburgh thaws closer to Spring. We'll be sure to share the results with you all at that time...
