Friends Bike, letting me ride it while he isn't riding it, gets roughly 90 miles to a fill up (that is filling up as soon as i notice the low fuel light come on)

the bike seems to run okay but does seem to run on the rich side from my other motorsports activities over the years

it is mostly ridden at highway speeds, 70-80mph daily for about 20 miles straight each way

i have just gotten ecm spy and the cable and reset the tps

anything else i should look into to see what may be the problem for the bad gas mileage?

thank you, also located in SouthWest Louisiana if anyone happens to be around here, i've seen 2 or 3 buell's riding around my town lately but can never run across them when i'm riding

Doesn't sound *that* far off.

90 / 2.5 gallons = 36 mpg

I get two round trips to work on a tank - that's 4 x 29 or so miles, easy, non-spirited riding.
116* / 2.5 gallons = 47 mpg

* edited for map checked route

I only get a little better than that at about 50mpg IF I spend half the time on the highway and have the time on the back roads. If it is all time on back roads then mileage is much lower and I expect around 100 miles between lights, but I also don't know if I'm filling to the proper level. Inside the tank there are two places, one is the top of the fill where the cap latches, the other is a dark flat spot which is where I fill, so I might only ever put 2 gallons in it. Do we fill all the way to the top of the tank, or only to that black flat spot inside the fill area?

yeah, there's that. I have an R too. And it's blue, so it's faster...

I always put exactly 2.5 gallons in after I hit the low warning. I know it'll hold it just right w/o spilling over and it's easy to watch my mileage with a fixed number.

Wow! My 12s gets solid 50 MPG. Maybe as low as 45 MPG if I thrash the crap out of it.

Driving at 80mph is killing your fuel economy. At 80mph that is about 4500RPM, between fighting the wind resistance and the short gearing you are not going to go far without filling up.

Since you do have ECMspy, check the AFV, it should be at around 100, if it is higher than that it is adding extra fuel.

That does sound a *little* low, even thrashing it I would get at least 42 mpg or so on the 9sx, and I'm tall (and fat).

Obvious first things to check are head temp sensor, intake air temp sensor, and 02 sensors.

Would those throw codes?

Not until they really fail, the O2 could go for a very long time giving bad measurements. Since you can get the o2 cheap at auto parts stores, that would be the first thing to fix. The intake air temp. should be available the same places, but I don't know what to cross it to.

It can, but it won't always. If say the O2 sensor is drifting, and it thinks the bike is 10% leaner than it really is, it will enrichen the fuel unnecessarily. Same could happen if the temperature sensors are reporting wrong, the bike thinks it is still cold and is running in cold startup mode. If the sensor is way off or not responding at all, the bike will know and throw a code, but otherwise the bike has no way of knowing.

There is a saying, Garbage in, Garbage out, meaning that if you have crap data going into the computer, you will have crap data coming out. The bike will think everything is fine as everything appears to it as functioning correctly, but you will see fouled plugs, poor fuel economy, running issues, and so on.

That's another good thought.
