Hey guys,
How much time would it take say....A Mechanic that knows, rides, and work on Buells at a H.D. Dealership would it take ,If one takes in just the 2 front folks to have New seals installed?

Anyone know the book time rate for hours to do same?

Remember they just have the 2 front folks to install the new seals in....

Thanks..
Just curios...

oh Btw what special tools are needed to do this job? I believe the bottom damper? tubes does not have to be disconected....?

Don't know the answer on the time, but you just need some standard tools and a seal driver to do the job. Took my a couple of hours to do mine.

The bottom tube has to come off to knock the old seal out. You should consider putting in new bushings too, 2 per fork. Your new seals will last longer with new bushings, so cheeping out when paying for labor may hurt you in the long run. Changing the bushings only takes a couple of seconds, so no difference in labor. I assume you are getting the dust seals done too. That's the external seal that you see at the bottom of the fork tube. When assembling the fork again the damping rod has to be adjusted correctly. It's a confusing procedure the first time through, but the manual details it well. Once you understand what's being done, it only takes a minute to do correctly.

A good tech with an organized shop should have the job done in a couple of hours no problem. I have no idea what the actual book time is.

Special tools would be a fork clamp and a spring compressor. I use the triple tree on the bike for the fork clamp when removing/replacing the top cap. A ratchet strap will work as a spring compressor. I added a simple hook that hooks the spacer tube better than the hook on the ratchet strap, but others have done without anything special. Learn how to release the ratchet strap slowly. Some folks don't know that they will do that. And follow the manual exactly when adjusting the damping rods to avoid damaging them.

Anyways I was charged just under 3 hours...Thought that was alot for bringing in 2 xb forks off the bike ,just to have 2 seals put in....

Perhaps that is the going rate....What do I know.

Forgot the seal driver on the "special tools" list.

3 hours labor charge would more than cover the cost of buying special tools and a manual.

Here's the link with my version of a spring compressor.

You also need a "tool" to set the oil height. I bent a coat hanger and put a paint line at the correct depth from the bend and use it as a dip stick.
