Bike 2006 XB12X with 26000 miles. Bike will not idle with the stock fuel maps modified in any way. Bit the bullet and ordered an EBR race ECM. And having the exact same issue. TPS is functioning as it should, reset it several times. Idle drops really low and will eventually flame out. Not throwing any codes? At a loss. I want this bike to run right and I am running out of things to troubleshoot.

You turned down the idle screw all the way out before doing the TPS reset, right?

Any backfiring or running issues at higher RPM? Is the tach needle behaving reasonably when it is dying?

Have you ever changed the inlet gaskets?

What is the idle speed (before it stops running obviously)?

maybe idel speed set too low, maybe plugs need changing?

You don't say what other mods you have?

Little more info:
Mods:
O7 Airbox lid with KN filter
Drummer Exhaust
New James intake seals
Just replaced plugs and wires.
Just replaced O2 sensor.

Pulled the airbox and double verified that butterfly is completely closed during TPS reset.

Back TPS off to get a "roughly" 1050 idle, which will set the TPS around 4.3, idle is very erratic and varies 150 to 200 RPM at most times. Once it switches from Open Loop to Closed the idle starts hunting worse, then if I rev at all it will drop down to 700-ish RPM and sometimes it will come back up but most times she will flame out?

Cheers Ken

What was the AFV of the original ECM before you swapped them? You could have a exhaust leak (from cracks around the O2 sensor bung) that causes the closed loop operation to run much richer than it needs to. Just something more to check out.

My 06 (with almost 9000 miles) is behaving in a similar manner (KN filter, race ecm, drummer). Once it warms up it's OK, but it's having a lot of trouble idling when cold.

AFV seems to want to stay around 130. Which I know is on the high side. If I reset it to 100 it gets even wonkier.

If it's doing that or if you are watching with ECMSpy and as it's running you see the correction jump, then yeah. You have an intake leak. I also had the James Gasket on the intake seal. Even that didn't fully work. In the end I got some Hylomar (you can get it at Advance Auto. Just ask them for it or order it from their website.) and used that with the intake seals. Solved the problem.

What happens if a person trickles propane from an unlit torch in around the intake when there is a leak? What other gas might be used to flush out an intake leak that might be less dangerous?

I don't think that propane would be dangerous, but you can also spray an oil like WD-40 on the seals to temporarily seal up a leak and the idle will change if there is a leak. I assume that is what you would be looking for with the torch.

About the worst you could do with the torch is light it. If you pulled it out right away, I really doubt you could burn any wiring or anything else. I just don't see it being likely that it would light by using it around a hot engine.

But how will the engine react when it sucks in the propane? We used to use freon to do this check because the engine would try to stall and it is essentially non-flamable, but with pollution laws and the prices, freon is no longer an option. Propane/butane/MAP is easy to get and most people will have some around. Other people use starting fluid (ether) but that is too dangerous for normal use.

So would the engine speed up or slow down after sucking in the propane?

The idle would rise with propane.

So would the engine speed up or slow down after sucking in the propane?

It really depends on how it's running. It will richen up when it sucks propane, as opposed to sucking air, that much is for sure. I would assume that if it was set up correctly, then now with a leak it's running lean and poorly, so it will almost certainly speed up a bit. It really doesn't matter though, what you are looking for is - does it change? If the propane changes the idle when the outlet is by the intake seals, they are leaking. Then again, spraying oil on the seals while idling will tell you the same thing.
