Time to run that patch wire...

Teeps, my fear is that running the patch wire will only help the fan portion of this. Whatever is going on is altering the fan behavior, and the bike's idle when cold. I'm starting to think it's a more important ground.

I'm also thinking I may have a bad ECU. I wish I could borrow a 2006 Race ECM from someone to test. I really don't want to spend another nickel on the bike until I know I've found a solution.

It could be time to hook up ECMspy and check what the temp reading is when you get the fan to kick on by turning the bars. That will give some idea what is causing the fan to go on.

Sifo, the next time I turn the bike on and it does the fan crap I'm definitely going to hook up ECUspy.

I'll post what I find...

The bike was acting normal today, but I figured I would hook up ECUspy anyway. As soon as I turned the key I noticed the TPS was jumping around a bit. Between 6.7 and 7.1 (I had reset it two rides prior to today). It did that for a while, and then it finally settled.

Is that indicative of a failing TPS? Is there a test I can perform on the TPS to see if it's still OK?

As a side note, the last time the bike was acting odd it threw a engine light (as it did in the past). Same code, 14. Even though there is a brand new engine temp sensor in there.

Any ideas gang?

Another update. Bike has been running good/bad on and off. Today it was on the colder side (low 60s). I turn the key, fire up the bike. Starts fine, idles fine for 10 seconds or so. All of the sudden the idle drops, bike shuts off, fan kicks on, and starts coming on/off. Same old odd crap. I tried to restart a couple more times, and it would idle OK for 5 seconds or so, start to idle poorly, then cut out.

For giggles I took the bike off the side stand and stood it straight up and down. No more issues. What the hell? What could that possibly have to do with a lumpy idle and erratic fan issues?

The saga continues....

The sidestand is mounted on the engine.
Applying weight to that would push the engine to move upwards a small amount in the rubber mounts.
Perhaps your enemy is above the engine? Chafed wire on top of rocker box or something?

That sounds plausible. When the problem crops up again I'm going to see if the side stand still "fixes" it. I'm so tired of chasing wires...
