Hey all!

Just picked up a 2006 Buell XB12ss. I've been running down the list of items to change/check, and I did the primary this morning. I rotated the primary chain around a number of times (bike in gear, grabbed the rear wheel and lifted up to rotate), and this appear to be similar all over the chain.

If I push the chain up, it was over 1/2" slack (cold). If I pushed the chain down, it would move about the width of the chain (down), and I had to push hard. Is this normal? The chain really didn't want to be pushed down.

I ended up adjusting the chain to just slightly under 1/2" of free play (pushing the chain up), and the bike runs much better. No more knocking sound either.

The play is supposed to be the total up+down slack.

Too loose is better than too tight. I prefer to adjust it when cold and use a box end wrench as a guide for play.

I know of this knocking sound. The inside of my X1 primary has the marks to prove I adjusted it too loose once upon a time : )

Aaahhh, total up AND down. That makes more sense now.

Thanks Nate!

I'd say pretty normal. between the Sportster and the Uly that I have, they both do it.
