so i have a 06 XB12 with a Signal Dynamics Heads Up LED voltage monitor, as seen here, http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/384622.html and i am getting the flashing green indication. reading through that post it says my VR is pushing out more than 15.25 vDC, and that i should replace the VR. is there anything else in the charging system to look at before getting a new VR?

When you're over voltage, there's not much other than the regulator. Is that 15.25 at idle? Does it go up more with RPM? 15.25 is high, but not what I've seen when I've lost regulators, but the voltage is RPM dependent.

It could be the Regulator but the only way tell is to swap it out. Pull the primary and take a peak at your Stator, burnt coils will throw crazy readings...plus you can look at it and tell if you're in need of a new one.

Cost is simply an oil change and beer.

being an LED i'm not exactly sure what the actual voltage is. this is the info for the LED.
- Flashing Green: above 15.25
- Steady Green: above 12.9
- Steady Amber: above 12.6
- Steady Red: above 12.1
- Flashing Red: below 12

at idle it will bounce between the amber and green, and at about 1800 - 2000 rpm it starts flashing green.

Put a real volt meter on it to be sure.

A bad VR, or bad VR connection could both do it. So check connectors and grounds as well.

If you can afford it right now, pick up a digital volt meter. A decent electronics store should have a variety of them, some should be quiet affordable. You will find it a handy tool to have around for years to come. If you don't want to spend the $20 or so, then I would just get the VR and replace it.

Good deal on the on board meter. You may have saved your battery. I tossed 2 batteries last year with charging problems on 2 bikes. This year I'm adding meters to them. It sucks when your first indication of a problem is the bike shutting off. I'm guessing that with the bad VR you may be seeing around 30 volts being pushed into the battery when up to road speed.
