Since I'll most likely buy used and it might be a 9, can you tell by looking at them?

Agreed, 04's have the newer belt. The 03's can be upgraded for I "think" about $650. If you can make the numbers work on an '03 9, you may actually be able to get an '03 9 and convert it.

You can tell at a glance the ‘03 from the ‘04. The ‘03 has more belt guard. Basically, you can’t see the belt without close inspection. It would be up to you if you got an ‘03 and wanted to convert it to the newer style. Because I wanted an ‘04 originally, but all I could find was an ‘03, I was a little upset that I wasn’t going to have the new system. I thought about converting to the new-style before I bought mine, but have since decided it is not worth it. I prefer the added protection the ‘03 guards provide from rocks and pebbles and I think that the guards make the bike look beefier on that side anyways. I’m not convinced the new system is any more durable than the old. I’ve had no problems with mine and a lot of others haven’t had any problems either. Gates makes excellent belts (old-style) as does Goodyear (new-style).

Im CONSTANTLY flogging my bike.
TONS of wheelies and lots of just blipping the throttle at like 45 mph.
I got the 03 belt and have had ZERO problems with it,even after letting a half retarded philipino change my rear tire.

You can tell just by lookin'
03

04

So far after getting the upgraded Gates belt I've had no issues at all.
Does this mean you've found one?
Or maybe a Beemer buyer?

Nothing concrete. Have to fix the Beemer first.

I know what the possible problems are. Ranging from easy and cheap to "ouch". In a nutshell its a bearing issue in the shaft/final drive. I should be at the V on my Trumpet. I put the stock bars back on as Lady Stunta wants to ride it to work and the combination of the dropped front, damper and clipons might have been a bit too much.
