My pops rode an 883 and let me learn on it. Now he has a Ural with a sidecar.

At first he didn't like my Buell cause he thought it was a ninja. But now when I start it up he will often walk over and give it a rev or two.

My father had an old Indian when he left the Navy after WWII . He was in a bad accident on it and went through several months of recovery . He drilled it into our heads when we were young that motorcycles were EVIL . I always wanted one , and after I was married and divorced , I got my first bike in 2000 - a Buell Cyclone . And even though I had an accident on it (operator error-doh!) , and broke my ankle , one month after I bought it , I have been hooked ever since .

My dad had a 72 Honda 350 when I was just a tyke but has an 85 Kawasaki Eliminator 900 now...pretty cool 80's muscle bike! He's been on my Buell but he's a pretty short dude and can barely reach on it...

My Dad and bikes don't mix very well.
On my Mom's side, there are bikes through the generations.
The earliest bike I remember was a bike my Uncle had, it was a Honda 750 Four.
He bought us a Honda Mini Trail for us to fight over in the mid 70s.
I think he's probably still laughing about that one.

Dad had a Triumph 500 thumper? That was in the 60's. Seems like there may have been another Brit. He had an oil drooling AMF era Sporty. He used to park that one in the house at the time. He had a Goldwing and a Valkyrie later. Those are the ones I remember.

Bikes my dad had in order of ownership:

1970 Kawasaki 100 Trail Boss (red)
1972 Kawasaki 175 (burnt orange)
1974 Kawasaki KX450 (green, of course)
1976 Honda CB 750 Super Sport (orange)
1977 Honda Gold Wing (red) with Vetter Windjammer fairing

And I got to ride them all. He even let me drag race the Super Sport at the high school drags during my senior year. He was an awesome dad........

I ended up owning the KX 450 when I turned 18. It was a crazy ride and he wasn't interested in going that fast off road.

My dad raced a Manx Norton, then built a road race sidecar outfit in our kithcen over around 6 months!
I remember being taken to Brands Hatch at around 7 years old and watching Agostini race against Hailwood, Read, Ivy etc.

We went to pretty much every major race meeting there throughout the 60's and 70's, including the first ever Match race series against the US team, which included Dick Mann, Gary Nixon etc. good times : )

My dad never had a bike of his own that I know of, but he rode my Honda 90 every chance he could. When I turned 16 and got my regular license, he would give me his car to drive so he could ride the Honda.

My dad courted my mom on a bike. She lived in Cali and we lived in Phx. I'm not sure what it was because I was very young, the first born of three. I remember it had two gas caps because I was way to small to ride on the back so dad put me in front and told me to hold on to the gas caps. The feeling I got holding those while dad's arms were around me is indescribable. The safest place on the planet. Those rides with my dad made us closer than any other times in my life.

He would not ride with me on the road. We lived in Phx and the valley is criss crossed with canals. These canals were quite large and had dirt roads on both sides. We rode these for a couple of years till my brother was old enough to get jealous. Mom convinced him to give it up, sell the harley and eventually gave birth to my sister. By then, dad was building tote goats with uncle howard for deer hunting.

Dad bought a wore out cushman eagle and stuck a 10 horse briggs in it and welded in mounts for a jackshaft. He put a snowmobile torque converter on it and turned me loose. It had the cushman gas tank and the briggs tank. It had expanded steel on both sides like a proper tote goat. This thing would go anywhere and climb anything. It would do 60 on level ground. The only thing it wouldn't do is turn sharp due to the tractor treaded rear tire. It was a hoot! Uncle howard ended up with it and I got a minibike. Eventually, I bought my first D/S- a '69 kawi tr120.

Dad never rode again and I never stopped. 58 bikes now and counting.
I look forward to riding with my dad again.

Mine had a few various bikes over the years, first on I really remember was a Kawasaki 400 or 450 with touring gear. That's the one he tried to teach me to ride on. I thought it was too heavy and scary (15 yrs old). He got a Honda Silverwing touring bike (750 or something like that) later on, while I was away in Iowa (1993-1995).

Around the time I moved back to Salt Lake ('95ish) he picked up a Honda Pacific Coast 800 and rode that until 2002 when he sold it. He's got a 750 Magna that he doesn't ride now.

He doesn't really get the Buell thing - thinks the motors are too big, but he understands the joy of riding just fine.

My dad started on a Cushman Eagle, drove that thing from Detroit MI, to Manila AR, when he was 13-14 years old (brave kid), when he got home to Arkansas he traded the Cushman for an old pre-war Harley-Davidson 45ci police bike that the local sheriff was not using any more. When I started to ride he had a 1980 Wide Glide, 1984 Softail, 1978 Electra Glide, and a Yamaha V-Max.
I have always liked the old FLH, and just the other day my dad called me and said I could have the old Electra Glide because he won't be able to ride anymore. So I have a great winter project, bike has not been started in over 9 years, just been sitting in the garage with a cover over it, gas tanks have been cleaned and lined, carb has been cleaned up also, so I will replace a few seals and gaskets, rebuild the brake master cylinders, and calipers, changer all the fluids, install a set of tires, new battery, and away we go!

My dad bought a Norton Commando as a commuter bike in 1973(?), it was raced and all the street legal parts came in a box. He put them back on and said it scared the crap out of him. He went to pass a car on the interstate in third gear and lofted the front wheel with too much throttle. He never rode much after that...

My Dad had a'76 KZ900 just after highschool. He and a few friends all bought them at the same time. When my older sister was born he sold it. I bought my first bike (KLX650) in highschool and he got the itch again. Turned out one of his buddies that bought a KZ with him still had it sitting in a shed it great shape. The old man picked it up for a song and later also added an'83 GL1100 Goldwing to his inventory. He gave me the Kawasaki this past summer and now focuses on long trips with my mom on his two wheeled sofa.

My parents were NOT streetbike fans at all. They instilled in me a fear of how dangerous it was on the public roads. I guess that why I waited until I was almost 40 before I got one. I'm glad I was brought up the way I was because I do have a great respect for 2 wheelers now. In 6 years of riding I've only had one warning ticket.
Thanks Mom and Dad

Dad never rode. I got him a CB-200T, that just sat around. Eventually he gave the bike back to me and said it was too risky to ride. At that point I was riding a '77FX (no E-kicker only) By my presenting him with the CB-200, which was a trade in at the MC shop I worked at, I though it might spark an interest in riding.

Nope.

My Dad used to "ride" this thing:

That's a ~1910 Wagner. The guy in the photo is my Dad's best friend's father, Mr. Julius Lifrage. Mr. Julius delivered the mail on this motorcycle in rural SC in the early 1900's. By the time my Dad was growing up in the 1920's, this bike and what was apparently an Indian with a sidecar were parked in the barn behind Mr. Julius's house. Dad and his friend used to sit on these things for hours pretending to ride them when they were growing up.

When I was a kid in the 1960's, I actually found the remains of this old Wagner (although I had no idea what it was at the time) in the woods not too far from where Mr. Julius's house was. It was pretty much the frame, engine, and forks. I wonder if it's still lying there under the kudzu rusting away. Here's what a restored Wagner looks like:

1942 HD WLA Part of the forward observer platoon for the 101st Airborne

Was assigned to it after spending 3 days in the flooded swamps behind Omaha beach.

Went into Holland with it in a Glider. He and his platoon we the first of the new breed of forward observers.

Rode the bike to Bastonge, and then left it at Hilter's Summer Castle when the 101st rotated to the USA.

An HD 250 Sprint, then he started racing motocross on a Yamaha DT 175. Soon he started racing enduros with a 250 Alpina and others I cannot remember. In his later years he had various road bikes. I did not live near him at that time so I am not sure of the models. The best thing was his support of racing for my brother and I when we were young. We both had the opportunity to race MX, Flat Track, indoor / outdoor short track, enduros all around the country. Great times with many fond memories.

Tough one, let's see. I might miss one or two in the late 80's/early 90's. From my memory...
Early 70's CB350 that he built from the frame up and traded for a:
70-something CB550. Green, I think.
Later 70-something silver CB750.
78 KZ1000LTD. Black.
79 GS1000E Black. Kerker pipe. Must have been built on a Wednesday. Faster than many later GS1100's...
1980 GS1100E. Silver. Lived through Dad, my uncle, me, at least three paint jobs, a friend, another friend, and a friend of a friend. Probably over 100,000 miles of abuse. What a bike!
1982 GS1100E. Wish he would have kept that one.
1984 V85 Sabre. What a motor!
198? 1000 Ninja.
Suzuki VX800. Front cylinder slung it's guts all over my shoes on a camping trip in Gatlinburg while my brother was riding my ZX11. What a weekend...
'84? Yamaha Venture Royale. Dubbed "The Brown Hornet" by my baby brother because of the two-tone brown paint job. Dad was riding it in Gatlinburg when the VX800 self-destructed.
I can't remember the next few, but an '87 Kawasaki Concours made the list not too awful long ago. An errant cager punted him and it under an S10 Blazer at a redlight. He was limping, the Connie was toast.
'04 Yamaha FZ1. Found himself riding way too fast too often, so he supermoto'd a:
DR650. LOTS of mods. It's mine now, because his CFO declared he could only have one bike so he decided to keep the:
second gen SV650N.
She relaxed the regs recently, so he added a '98 Honda 750 Magna.
I'm sure I probably missed one or two in there somewhere...
