Found out there is a Buell XB12 racing at Oesershlaben (wrong spelling, I know). Here is a note from the stuff I read on RRW that you might find interesting. Especially if you remember Motorcyclist saying in their crappy article on the 12S that Buell should buy the KTM engine...

>>Of the more unusual entrants in the Prototype or Open class, only the Schittko KTM LC8 has failed to qualify; this year’s field at Oschersleben will include an MZ1000S, a Buell XB12R and a Kawasaki Z1000.<<

Speaking of endurance racing... How cool is this...

http://venus.13x.com/roadracingworld/scripts/NewsInsert.asp?insert=10239

A Buell could actually win the Daytona 200 next year. That certainly would set the sport bike world on its head. Time for a full on factory effort? I bet a lot of BadWeBs would chip in to help fund that effort. : )

I know, the 200 isn't an endurance race.

Will be looking for the results of the Oschersleben 24 hour race tomorrow. Go Buell!!!

quote:

The first mechanical casualty of the race was Yamaha Phase One, reported pushing in after only fifteen minutes;

Yamaha Phase One have rejoined the race after tracing an electrical component failure – the starter button had jammed on, draining the battery – but the pit lane has stayed busy. Suzuki Eurosport Benelux have pitted with damaged bodywork, and Benelli X-One have come into pitlane trailing a cloud of blue oil smoke.

The party continues for the spectators, unaware of the mechanical carnage going on in pitlane; this must be one of the toughest races for the leading teams in recent years. The latest in a growing list of retirees is Kawasaki Bolliger, forced to throw in the towel after returning to the pits with an engine that sounded “like a Ducati’s dry clutch rattle”. Generator failure is suspected, but the team are definitely out of the race. WRT Honda Austria are also officially out of the race, the engine having been damaged by shrapnel from the failed gearbox.

Still 16 hours to go...

Thanks, Blake! BTW, this XB12 is basically stock with just over 100RWHP. It'll be interesting to see how it does.

I think Anon means that the bike is basically stock minus the 100 RWH

Stage three heads.
Full race exhaust.
Buell (true) race ECM.
1200cc kitted XB9.
Couldn't that get you about 100 RWHP?

After hour 12

Glitch, that would get you a hell of a lot more than 100 RWHP.

The thing makes over 90 RWHP in finely tuned stock form. The endurance racing machine probable has a race kit and some basic porting.

Really? That's all?
I guess though you'd have to keep it as simple as possible to keep it as tough as possible for such a race.

The Start

Although the KTM LC8 (a SuperMoto on steroids, dwarfed only by its unfeasibly tall riders) failed to qualify, the three other interesting Open class bikes will start the race.

The MZ1000S (above) qualified in 39th place with a best time of 1:37.908.

41st place for the Lohmann Kawasaki Z1000 (above), on 1:38.454, and the Buell XB12R (below) made the grid with a best lap of 1:38.887.

Interesting reporting from the race...

Hour 16...

quote:

Suzuki Castrol are out of the race, and out of the race for the Championship. THe engine on their GSX-R1000 blew shortly after midnight, dropping oil at the Shell Esses and bringing down seven other machines. The pace car was brought out for twenty two laps while the incident was cleared but Suzuki Castrol’s race was over.

Hour 20:

quote:

Kawasaki Diablo are out of the race after their motor blew. Team manager Miles Hutchins explains: “James came back covered in oil from the knees down, but the bike isn’t back yet so we don’t know what went wrong; something big like a connecting rod perhaps.

Kudos to the Buell team for giving it a go and doing better than a number of other teams in a very rigorous and challenging competition. I hope they go for it again next year.

This was a team from the top German Buell dealer, and they did a fine job. My understanding was their goal was to show reliability this year, so they didn't push the power at all. I'll bet they go back next year with Formula Extreme type power.

Here's to next year!
Also, as shown by Blake, it takes a lot just to finish with bike intact.
GO BUELL!
