Anyone tried wrapping their exhaust pipes with the heat tape ya see on race cars and such? I was wondering if it would hurt to wrap it near the frame and wiring to keep things a little cooler or if it's just a waste of time and money. | ||

It should help a little (I have no Dyno's) but I have seen it and it's UGLY. | ||

On certain bikes it looks pretty cool. Been thinking about trying some on the pipe closest to my seat to keep the heat levels down on hot days. | ||

Thermo Tec makes a Graphite Black tape. It's $28 for a 50 foot roll. I think I'll give it a try. | ||

We used it on the race bike but honestly couldn't tell if it increased performance, as claimed, or not. If you want a tidy job it is best to do it with the exhaust removed from the bike. They aso do a spray to stop the wrap getting discoloured. | ||

I am a Big guy, 6'4'' 270lbs, and i found that my jeans rubbed on the header pipe on the back cylinder, so i did three things, one coated the header pipe in heat paint (comes in many colors) this looks good, two wrapped the rear head pipe up by the header flange down until it just went past the frame, three made a small Aluminum heat shield that mounts right below the frame, looks good and no one even knows it isnt stock unless i tell them even my buddy who owns the same buell i do didnt even notice it. The heat shield does two things one keeps my pants off the top of the pipe and also hides the bottom end of my header tape job cant even see it. If you like i can post pictures tonight. | ||

B_S, the paint don't do so well. I tried it on the Bandit, looks like hell after a short time. The wrap idea sounds good so far. Ceramic coating sounds good too. There's a guy locally that does the ceramic coating. | ||

The ceramic looks killer and would like to add to my to do list. Problem is I keep addin' and haven done any substractin'. I'm not diggin the multicolored pipe from the heat. Do you have to send them your pipes and how long does it take? And of course $$? | ||

Black_sunshine...I spoke to the folks at Jet Hot a few months ago about having the headers for my 9R done...they said it could be turned around in a few days (you send them just the headers) and would cost around $150 | ||

Jet Hot is expensive. Maybe it's because they are so well known or maybe the product is just beyond everyone elses but I would bet on it being that they are just a little high priced. I got my pipes ceramic coated black. It cost less than $100.00 and they did em' in one week. Have had em' on the bike for a year and just a little fading next to the cylinder. They look great. | ||

I can Beat that wait until you guys see my pics. I think it has something there for all of you. I coated my header pipe black, actually its a flat black almost satin color with alittle metal flake in it, did it for about 20 bucks us, (thats paint and brush) Its called POR 15 here is the link. http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=268 I found that pulling the headers off and sand blasting them then painting them worked best, you can brush or spray dont worry no brush marks when brushing on when fully dry all brush marks disappear. And it with stands temps, up to 1200 F. This stuff is also very hard to chip, (no stone chips), and best of all if u are only painting your header pipe and muffler, an 8oz can will do it, because u put on 2 to 3 light coats. Again guys i will post pictures tonight. | ||

Funny, the multicolor is what I'd like to keep! Yes you have to drop off your pipe. The turn around from what I hear is very fast. We'll talk to Rodi (Minitrucker) I think he's one of his friends. | ||

Also lazy i see on your bike u had the trouble i started to have on getting the header pipe past the frame tube in the front, just an fyi for all of u thinking of taking them off, using a buddy and a floor jack, support the motor and undo the bolts to the engine cage, then unbolt the upper mount by the back cylinder head then finally undo the large Hex head bolt , chrome looking and at the base of the steering steam (from under the bike look up to the handel bars.) Then drop the motor to service positionThe front of the engine pivits down the back cylinder header slides out of the frame and the header pipe comes out torwards the front. | ||

R1DynaSquid - This stuff is good and it does cut down on the heat maybe not as much as ceramic coating however u cant beat the price, I have rode my bike personally all summer with no problems and so has my buddy. This heat paint from POR 15 is good because it actually uses heat to setup, after drying 24 hours after placing the final coat, u start up your bike and let it run until the bike is good a hot, say 20 mins, and it is only then the paint has fully set up. The more heat the paint sees at that point and the long it sees it the harder the paint will set up. i would never suggest anything on here that i dont have on my own bike and like it myself. |
