Week ago started getting an intermitant squeal / chirp from the mid right side of engine. Checked a few things with the primary and finally removed the belt sprocket cover , popped off the black cap and found that the needle bearings blown to smithereens. Gonna remove the belt and back the pulley off . Beside monkeying off the huge bolt, are there any specific tricks to this swap out , i.e. keeping the same position for the pulley off/ on due to meshing etc ? Need to keep this repair cheap due to a piece of shit Landrover Im fixing up that has been a money pit.

thanks in advance

BK1

I saw on this site, a few years ago, about someone else that was having this problem. I think you have to split the cases to fix it. Not cheap.

: (.

Happened on my M2. That 5th gear drive assembly pushes *into* the case, and you have to get the transmission output shaft out first.

You have to split the cases. And your output shaft is probably toast ($80 or something for the M2).

Yeah i had to fix mine. I took my pully cover off to make a custom one and the seal was totally gone. Bearings were trashed. I ended up needing a main shaft and the bearings. Yeah its a bit of work but i know what the motor looks like inside and out. (I did paint my motor black while it was out of the frame....along with everything else)

As far as a price if your doing it yourself you id guess you will have about $200ish in parts (shaft, bearings, gaskets) and a good a mount of labor.

Did you need any special tools to split the cases Rage?

No not to split the cases. You do "need" some special tools to get the tranny out, 5th gear and the bearings in the gear.

Got the bad news. Gotta split the case to fix it. got prices from 2 shops and both are in the $2K range. Tough to swallow as I only paid $2500 for her . Thinking of getting a new motor from Crashed Toys and throwing it in. Shop said it will do a motor swap for $700. If I do get ambitious and try to do myself, what special tools would i need once I get inside. This is a major bummer . I love this bike and would think I wouldve gotten more than 7K miles out of her before a major repair. Anyone have a motor out there ??

Special tools for which, the engine swap or for splitting the case?

Nothing special (tools) for a swap, at least nothing you can't buy from most auto parts stores or a good Sears, etc.

No way I would pay a shop to swap the motor, it is not that hard! I'd rather invest the $700 in any tools I needed and maybe beers for friends to help.

Remember that if you buy an 04 or newer motor you will need to do one of the following:

- change the rear pulley and belt to the newer style

or

- change the front pulley to the 03 style

if you are getting one from a wreck see if they will throw in the rear pulley and bolts/washers, then buy a new belt.

+ 1 Greg. Don't forget that the idler pulleys are different on the '03 models as well.
