Since most everyone was afraid of doing the "empty your air box" experiment, I did it last night, and rode all day to see how it would act.

The reason I wanted to, was the dyno sheets on the HillBilly web site. Especially the one with the Jardine and F.A.S.T. system. The reason this one got my attention the most was because of the torque hole that was complained about. Having the Buell Race kit I am familiar with the hole.
On the Hillbilly site I noticed no such hole using the F.A.S.T. system.

Alex said if you wanted to see what it was like the closet we could come would be to remove the box top and filter, let the bike learn the new air flow, and see how you like it.

1st-It's loud!
2nd-I have lost the torque hole. I can not prove this by way of dyno. But I surely felt the hole. With the empty air box cover, there's LOTS of grunt way down low, say 2000 rpm and up!

I'm sold!
Gonna get me a F.A.S.T. system as soon as I have the money!

I truly felt a difference.
Ran it up to 4500 in first, the just whacked it open, and the front lept up, not just lifted up, but came up with authority!

So, let me get this straight.

You ran it open, no filter, no lunch box.

Right?

I did a search for this F.A.S.T. thing you were talking about and the "empty your airbox experiment" and didn't find anything. Whatever it is you're talking about sounds interesting. Perhaps you could explain or at least point me to the thread or reference so I can educate myself.

He removed the inner and outer airbox covers and ran the bike with no filter at all. The F.A.S.T system was discussed in the thread "Velocity Stack Challenge Results"

hey glitch
did crankcase breathers puke all over the inside of the air box ? i'm waiting for a thermal blanket with an x-tra hole for the sensor.before i try my kit.if it doeesn't come by weekend i might poke a hole in the one i have. it seems we might be right about keeping the sensor in the intake air.in the interim all i can do is wait , wait , wait

What I did was remove my XB12 air box.
Removed the K&N filter.
The only thing covering the intake was the air box cover. Very noisey!
Rode for as long as I could at a steady 3800 all the way to work, took the back way.
On the way home I rode it to SMHD/Buell and took some realy tight back roads home from there.

Throttle response was so crisp it suprised me.
Coming out of tight corners was more fun than ever.
Having lived with that torque hole the whole life of the bike, having low end like that was tremendous fun.

I've now put the air box back together after playing around in the rolling hills of northern Gwinett for an hour or two. Back to normal until I can cut up the XB12 lid. I also found some insulated mylar ("oven mit" lookin' stuff) that people use to put on the floor board of cars to keep the heat from the tranmission coming through the floor board, at a local auto pats store.
I'll be running it that way until I can get my hands on a F.A.S.T system.

The crank case breathers didn't puke at all, but I imagine I'll need some sort of catch can whe I do it for real. No problem though, there's all sorts solutions in the KV (gotta love the BadWeB) for that sort of thing.

Alex gave me the idea.
If you haven't read the whole thread.
Lots of good stuff there.

No filter? I like the idea of removing stuff under the airbox cover, but I'm not too keen on not having an air filter. Sounds like I'm just asking for trouble.

Sorry, just read the linked discussion. I'm definately not going to be removing the filter, as I'm in a freaking desert and have dirt in my mouth after just two minutes on the bike.

So are you guys talking about 9's or 12's? Wish more people would be specific-maybe you were in the previous threads. Us guys with the 12's feel left out in the performance gains stuff-seems like nothing short of big-bore kits really provides any sizable gains on the xb12.

Just my opinion and I am hoping to be corrected on this.

Well I've decided to get a 12 box lid and I'm going to take to it with a drill. I'm talking drilling so many holes that the carcass is left only to seal the cone on the air filter.

why not just figure out a way to secure the filter with the outer cover only? Cut out that 12 filter area and epoxy it to the inside of the outer cover and leave out the rest?

@Glitch:
thanks for sharing Your experience.
@Wyckedflesh:
yes, Your right. Leaving the K&N race filter with a self made filter top will perfectly do if You leave the air box top cover. Find a way to get rid of water (does it rain where You live?) accumulating in the lower air box cover in case You will leave it.
@Fed:
We tried to locate the IATSensor within the intake stream. This was no good. Here´s why I believe it should be positioned in a different place: the stock location is within the air box. A black plastic air box located right above the engine. This is not really a cold place. Putting the sensor underneath the thermal blanket seem to produce a quite similar temperature area not confusing the ECU too much.
@XBolt12:
12 engines respond very well to head work. No big bore needed.
@All:
again, if You experiment with "filterless" intake systems (following my quick and dirty method of removing the upper air box cover and filter):
BE AWARE OF DRAWING UNFILTERED AIR INTO YOUR ENGINE WHICH MIGHT RESULT IN ENGINE DAMAGE.

Take care

One question - does the FAST system use bigger/smaller/different K&N filter to the race kit K&N?

Thanks Trench for trying the swiss cheese on the 12.

No worries, Opto... I couldn't help it.

I must tell you I have one issue at the moment... Cold starts are making my bike a little rough right now...

I suspect the stock exhaust is making a bit too much back pressure while the intake is flowing too well, so when cold it cough's a couple of times then runes great... I know other bikes do that stock, so I'm not worried...

Could also be related to the intake temp sensor, I'll play with that some more, too.

Did you see the post i made about my intended mod for the airbox??? I will be taking pictures of that one for all to see...

Oh, and i suspect the Buell race air cleaner has a greater suface area to the pod style in the fast system...

“you’re a lair” I've been called worse

Everyone, I was/am aware of what might have happened. I did it for one day, as an experiment. Risky? OK but I guess I'm a man of danger! ; )

Can't help any one with questions about a 12 as mine is a nine. The less risky experiment would be to just take as much material away from the box top as possible and still be able to hold the filter in place. If you didn't like the results, buy another box top. You'd be out $30 or so.

Its harder to do with a 12 with a stock exhaust since the exhaust valve controler sits inside/on the cavity at the top of the inner airbox cover.

Just be careful not to destroy the structural integrity of the lid or it may not provide a very good seal with the air filter.

Here is what I did:

Swiss Cheese

THis is actually a XB9 lid but I've done the same thing on my XB12 box that is not fitted to my 9.

The results are posted in "From Cruiser to Sport Bike - An XB9S Rider's Log by Keith Thrash..."

Hogs, I'm following this FAST thread and drilling the airbox out discussion thing closely myself and I'm waiting for an answer too. After sitting and staring at my intake scoop for awhile I think I'm going to make a plate to effectively split the scoop down the middle horizontally and curve it at the inside end of the taper to force more air into the intake hole thru the frame. This will still let air continue to the rear cylinder also. I think I'll make it out of fiberglass. I took the snorkle out but all it does is make the hole bigger and I think a little ram-air will help.

Thanks Odie,
What about making scoops in the top cover where the Buell decals are to let some air in the front there Like little raise scoops as well as drilling out the 12 air box cover what u think?? Course one has to watch out for the rain etc.

I thought about that and I believe that I actually saw some on a web site sometime back. I would prefer to keep things as stock as possible as far as the basic shape and styling of the bike but I also have to let the newness wear off so the Boss doesn't throw a fit if you know what I mean!! The one I saw had one on each side of the airbox cover I think. It actually looked pretty cool. Depending on how the air traveled from the intake would be the deal as far as rain goes. If the air just came in the holes and was free flowing after that I believe it would get ingested into the intake system. On the nose of our helicopters is a vent about 6" by 12" that allows ram-air into the nose compartment to cool off the avionics but the intake runner or path that it takes makes a turn and at the bottom of the turn are two small rubber hoses about 1" in diameter that allows water to escape and get drained overboard. I don't think there would be enough room for that inside the already cramped airbox area. I am curious if any 12 owners have "swissed" their boxes though.....I'm gonna keep dwelling on my idea. I don't think it would make a huge diff but who knows. I don't think it would hurt anything, that's for sure........
