Are you looking at the starter motor? Could it be stuck/engaged? Some people have been known to whack their starter with a blunt hard object to test this, others use wrenches.

Prior to whacking it... try bumping the starter with the start button a few times. This may loosen up a sticky solenoid. If you hear it popping in and out, try roll-starting it. If it roll-starts and you do not hear the GOD AWFUL noise, you know the solenoid is sticking. If you roll it off and the noise is there, you know the solenoid is stuck. Of course this a good test only if the noise is coming from the starter for sure.

Could also be a loose primary chain if he rode in the rain and the moisture in the air breathed into his primary fluid and thinned it out some. Pop open the clutch inspection cover and see what color the fluid/lube is. If you're using old fashioned oil/lube and it mixed with moisture it will look like chocolate milk, I don't know what synthetic oil/water mixtures look like.

Or it could be something else entirely.

After I did a couple hundred mile ride in the rain I found that the Primary cover gasket had let water seep in and a little oil out. Could also have gotten in through the trans vent line I guess too. Just a thought.
