Timbo... thanks for the info. I must say finally I might be learning something. Now all I need to do is send the wife to work so I can buy "mandatory" parts for my bike.

On that note I can't believe the difference drilling a bunch of holes in my airbox makes.

So a big thanks to ALL of you who have the smarts to try different options and share them with people like me.

so this is only for the 9r not the 12r? i mean should i drill a bunch o holes in the 12r's airbox cover?

DJ, Deerhunter, Opto, and myself have drilled our boxes on our 12's and can notice a difference. It sure hasn't hurt anything. I think I will get rid of the box all together eventually. I'm happy for now and I'm trying to look at exhaust mod's that I can do. Drill away!!!!!

I drilled my box...on my 12r (that really doesn't sound right) I have a drummer and now... the bike...fricking really rocks. Throttle is nice... power is smooth... sounds like a real bike. I just need a few more things!

I don't think so. I know they make a quality product that performs very well, but I don't have unlimited funds. And besides, my garage all ready has WAY too many 'spare' parts collecting in it.

i just cut some holes in my b0x and let me tell u, 1. the bike sounds different (mean as hell) 2. extremely more power 3. i was doing wheelies in 3rd gear (something i thought wasnt possible)

Does the air from the scoop pressurize the air box? If so then does it increase power? If it does then how much? Would that cause more power on the street than on the Dyno?

The scoop, even though tagged as 'ram air', really doesn't do much in the way of pressurizing the airbox.

You'll see more gains running an open air box than you ever would on the street with a ram air system. Even true ram air systems don't appreciably help power until something like 100mph, IIRC.

In speed trials on my R6, we tried 3 different gears (4th, 5th &6th)... The bike got it's second wind in all 3 gears at the same speed... 180kph. That was in the NT, Australia, where there is an open speed limit.

Now, the R6 is a bike with proper sealed ram air box, tuned as only the japanese can.

I tried the same trial with the XB12 and got no noticable gain at any speed.

The only conclusion I could draw was that the ram air on the XB is a myth.

Now, we have all acknowledged that opening the air box gives gains at legal speeds.

Hope that puts things in perspective.

Kind of contradictory.
Zero resistance = still air ready to be sucked in.
Ram Air = pressurized air being forced in.
Heh, marketing.
Probably got by me 'cause I know ram air on the street ain't really rammin'.

They didn't say ram air for what. The rear cylinder is cooled with "ram air".

Remodeled the Drilled holes box to---> Jig sawed out SLOTS, cut out sections and leaving aprox: 2" inch strips coming up from the six(6) mounting points Air filter cover is Good And Tight and even MORE air to let in ALL around the filter area not limited to 3/4 inch holes only seems logical to let as much air all around filter and not restrict air to travel through holes seems To like it ALOT...:-)

Finally got around to (starting) this last night. My damned cordless drill died on me. I cut two big holes out of the sides (with a dremel) and then went to work with a 3/8" bit on the rest of it. Ugly as sin, but hey, I'm not about to put one of those silly CityX covers on it. Took it for a spin late last night, even though I've only got about half the holes I had planned.

This is a very happy bike. Revs much easier, the mid-range hole is much improved, though not gone, and by God, when you nail the throttle it ROARS.

YEah same here Darthane ,it won`t win any prizes at the Beauty contest but after all them holes I previous Drilled and cut out It now ROARS :-) NExt is a Scooped on top of the BUELL outer cover with a flap that I Can open and close if I want in case of SNOW :-))

YEah I can`````t see it too be too hard to gear something up that one could either flap it open or close..... with a screen in place, HAve to get a spare tank/outer cover first for experiment and at the right place they are too expensive to buy newwww.. to chop up.. :-)

Well I got caught in the rain on the way home today. Big afternoon shower. Bike ran well, no hiccups. So I guess water never made it into the holes of the airbox.
