My '05 xb9sx is my first motorcycle and I'm looking for some guidance from the more experienced badweb collective. In short, I am seeking the most comprehensive and cost effective tuning software for my m/c.

Background: I am mechanically inclined and purchased my Buell intending to do all the maintenance and upgrades myself. It is time for its 10k mi service and I am getting it ready for the riding season.

Situation: I have noticed that several of the maintenance procedures require a TPS reset and I need a tool to perform this task. I will be making upgrades to the fuel/air system soon (exhaust and open airbox conversion) and need a tool to tune the ECM.

Request: What is the most cost effective way to safely tune my Buell? I have looked into ECMSpy and TunerPro, but am certain that I have missed other options. There are several posts on BadWeb regarding this topic, but it seems that most of them are old and outdated (i.e. they refer to ECMSpy as freeware--at $118, it certainly is not). Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

If you are mechanically inclined and are going to do all your own maintenance get a factory service manual. They run about $50-60 and have ALL the info you will need, including how to do a TPS reset without software. They can usually be found on ebay or if not American Sport Bike carries them too.

Thanks for the advice. I've already downloaded a Firebolt service manual; it seems close enough to the Lightning to work. However, it says to use a Digital Technician to perform the TPS reset. My understanding is that this device is only available to dealers. There may be work-arounds for resetting the TPS, but my primary concern is finding a good tuning package.

The old freeware ECMspy will do what you want, and is the easiest way to do the TPS reset. TunerPro is more powerful, and would be what I recommend to use when doing your tuning, it is also freeware. Everything can be done using the same interface cable, it is available from American Sport Bike.

Also while you are there, pickup an 05 Lightning manual, there are quite a few changes between Firebolt and lightning, odds are the Firebolt manual you picked up was for the 2003, which also has quite a bit of differences between that and the 05.

Thanks, Froggy. The manual I have is for the '05 Firebolt, but it would probably be worth the investment to purchase a Lightning version.

As for software, TunerPro does seem to be the most appealing option. I am a little concerned that it might not be very user friendly and there doesn't seem to be much support on their website. Maybe I'm already a little in the weeds on this one, but I can't even figure out what kind of wideband O2 sensors are supported.

Hey Froggy...

I have a couple more projects in the works. But I have one Fuel adj table done to target certain AFR's for the map cycle change...

Shoot me an email and I'll feel you in on some of what is going on behind the scene.

I can get you trial sheets from excel.

Glad everyone loves the Tunerpro ... That was a challenge to get functional... I was about to go gray and bald doing that one...

We were Lucky to get mark from Tunerpro to assist with the last bit of code needed for the plugin to read and write and poof its all history.

Thanks Mark....

also thanks to Gunter for doing each full XDF from his database and his ADX versions for People. It would have taken me forever to do all of them the old fashion way... shew
Thanks Gunter

Also:
Remember, I did the first ones (ADX, generic XDF) so if you have any special request on commands to clear DTC codes and such I can tell you all how to put that into your ADX... or add data to the XDF to get other tables and data visible.

Note: page one data is not uploading changes due to security reasons... 99% of the data in page one is not necessary for changes anyway except front AFV... Other than that all needed data starts on page 2 on...

Xopti, what do you use to calculate your desired AFRs as temperature, pressure, and humidity change?

your going to have to add the Map sensor. see the tuning guide on adding it to get the pressure. As for humidity its going to reflect in the EGO values based on O2 voltage. The best you could do is add on a measurement devise and plug it into the ecm on a empty line to record the values. Even then it will not use the data for anything but it would record it in the datalog to view.

I have an excel sheet I use to curve the afr from actual to desired and it will calculate the map values based on what you have VS what you want. email me about it and I'll get it to you.

Ok, I was curious how you do it. I know how to do the stoichiometric balance by hand for temp, pressure, humidity, equivalence ratio, and combustion efficiency to get actual AFR (I don't mean instantaneous that the engine is running at, I haven't figured out how to back that out yet).

I can add a partial pressure sensor to my arduino to datalog. If you are using the O2 sensor into the ECM, it will always make corrections to get to to 14.7, so if you tune your entire map to different AFRs, do you just shut off your O2 sensor?

No I run a different unit like an LC1 or LM1 that allows me to offset the actual AFR fooling the ecm to think its making it 14.7 when its actually 14.2... No way around that cause we cant find the algorithm area to change how its doing it. Some things are just stuck how they are. This always makes the CL are instantly running on EGO vs Actual fuel map. So if you cruising the EGO will correct it out but if your going in and out of Open loop then that is the lean and rich part people feel and see as lean. not steady Closed loop riding...

If you disable the O2 how is your bike going to adjust on the basic data? A carb is pressure sensitive to atmospheric conditions. A fuel injector, well, it will give what you told it no matter what conditions even if its wrong... well within reason. Sometimes carbs are much more simple. Just smelly to adjust...
