Please forgive me for not doing a search but, I need immediate info.
I 've got a chance for a good buy on a 2004 xb12s.
It is in a neighboring state and I would prefer to ride it home than trailer it.
It needs a shifter return spring. Is this a repair that can be done easily and quickly
in this dealer's lot or do you recommend shop service?

thanks,
Mark

The spring is in the primary chain
housing, and is easily accessible.
If the housing is removed, it is
readily visible. The clutch pack/
rear sprocket assembly will move out just
enough for replacement of the spring.
So, yes, it could be done in a parking
lot...

But, unless someone has opened the
primary cover to take a look, I question
whether that's the problem. Since it's
so easy to do, why hasn't it been done..?

Cycledoc59,
The bike is for sale at a car dealership so they don't know much about it. That may be the reason they didn't try to repair it.
I will question the seller more closely about the spring.
Many thanks,
Mark

That spring only returns the shifter
lever to mid-point, ready for the next
shift. So, if that's really the problem
the bike will still shift ok. The
dealer ship folks could simply push
the bike to confirm if it will shift
up/down. If the lever flops, but the
trans will shift ok, then yes, that spring
would be the problem.

My concern is that breakage of that spring
is quite rare...and I suspect the bike will
not shift. Meaning sum ting wong inside.

That is my fear also. I told the guy that I may take a ride to his place and check it out. It's only 70 miles or so. It may also be a moot point because I just spotted one on a for sale board here in Maine. A 2007 with 4K miles for $5800.00 asking price. NADA states average retail at $4900. We'll see. heh heh
