Motorcycle hits 165 mph in two-state highway chase
From Staff Reports

PORTSMOUTH — A speeding motorcyclist evaded police in two states Sunday night.

Maine State Police, who at one point clocked the bike at 165 miles per hour on the Maine Turnpike, chased the motorcyclist for approximately one hour with help from several local police departments.

The motorcyclist was first reported speeding on Interstate 495 in New Gloucester, Maine, near the state police barracks. During the chase, the bike circled through several towns, including Kittery, York, Berwick, Kennebunk, Wells, Biddeford and Saco.

Maine State Police called off their chase at 7:32 p.m. for safety reasons due to heavy traffic in the area of the Kittery outlet malls on Route 1.

Portsmouth police picked up the chase briefly when the motorcyclist crossed the state line into New Hampshire. The bike reportedly went through the city in approximately 65 seconds.

Sgt. Steven DuBois said Portsmouth police lost contact with the bike as it was headed toward North Hampton on Route 1.

Maine state police said there were conflicting reports as to exactly what type of bike the motorcyclist rode, and they were unable to get license plate information.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call (207) 871-7755.

Democrat Staff Writer Pat McGowan contributed to this report.

What this country needs is an Autobahn so we can do stuff like that without all those annoying red & blue lights!!!

Woot Woot : ). Yeah baby, Yeah! Reminds me of my teen years in Alaska on my dirt bike.

Disclaimer - Do NOT run from the cops if you will endanger anyone but you or them (it's their job and quite frankly, I think they enjoy the chase).

I been in the car with all the lights in the second place position a few times... trust me... it ain't that much fun. They pay me to take calculated risks... I do em... don't mean I always like it!!!

Well I'm sure, but after the chase when you're all OK it's gotta be something you can look back on and get a chuckle. Too often that's not the case, but the ones that are I'm sure would be a good time.

I am glad to see the police were responsible enough to end the chase when they felt the risks to innocent bystanders became too high.

I am sad to see that a fellow motorcyclist put his own self interest... basically money... above the lives of the innocent people he was endangering, the people that care about him, and the reputations of his fellow riders.

It is possible that it was a stolen bike, or worse.

My comments posted earlier were not intended to show approval of his actions, the story just made me think of someone coming back for one last ride. I think I'll just move them elsewhere.

Last week the United Bikers of Maine published a warning in their news letter that the state and local LE's had a mandate to crack down on uninspected bikes. our inspection stickers are not mounted on the bike and visible but kept attached with the reg. It is very possible this started as a spot check for that. Unfortuneately this may mean more stops for us here in Maine.

It's all fun and games until the blue flashing lights end up behind you. Then it becomes SPORT.

I thought someone was making a big deal out of the fact that it might be possible a buell could do 165!
