I knew it would happen. I have an original belt, 6800 miles, and small cracks in the surface were already showing. Today the belt finally gave up on me, one block away from home. Few questions: Is it covered under warranty? Which belt do I need and what does it cost? What does an upgrade cost to the '04/05 pulleys+belt? How much time to install either one of those? Thanks! | ||

No need for the pulley upgrade. Buell came out with an upgraded belt for the 03's, Dave can probably get the correct part number for you. No its not covered under warranty With a decent rear stand you can swap that belt out in less than a 1/2 hr easily. Just make sure you loosen your axle first before removing the swing arm brace. You also dont need to loosen or remove the idler pulley. | ||

ingemar.. DHam.. i have to take typing leasons..to type faster, you guys olready posted it the upgrade belt no. G0500-02A8R the old on's where F i believe and like dyna says...piece off cake, the most work is to get the belt guard off, all those tiny bolts  ping me iff you want help.. DON'T pry or poke or bent your new belt and officialy it's not covered for warranty, but i know a few lucky on's who got it for warranty, but those where halve year old bike's with little or no miles on theme gr, b (Message edited by bud on January 08, 2005) | ||

I've paid $130 for a good o-ring chain. Tsubaki omega 520 on a dirtbike. $136 isn't so bad considering. | ||

Think of all the time and lubricant you'll save by keeping the belt too. Anyway, the new belt is WAAAAAAAY better (more durable) than the one you had. | ||

Also, keep in mind that when you replace a chain you normally have to replace the sprockets too and that can run you to a total price of $140+ | ||

Well, mine was replaced under warrantee, but a I went to the dealer before it broke and showed them how it was failing. They took pictures and Buell USA (I think) authorised the replacement. It only had 6,200k's on it. As for the chain and sprockets, word from the manufacturer with my set is 50,000k's before the sprockets may need replacing, more if I look after them, but I'm using high carbon steel sprockets. They also claim the GXW 530 chain is good for that many k's, too... So even if the belt had lasted to the specified service intervals I'd need to replace 2 belts to one chain set... I had to fab all the rest of the parts for the kit myslef. | ||

So long as you keep a chain lubed properly it will easily last at least 30,000 miles. The sprockets may need replacing at the same time but again with proper care sprockets can last as long as 2 chains. | ||

I agree. You are better of with the belt. I had polished wheels on my last bike and hated the chain as it always flung oil all over the back wheel. Even using a non fling lube. Also you don't have to adjust the belt. Norrie. | ||

As long as the bike is within the factory warranty period (12 months for '03, 24 months for '04+) and the stock belt guards are in place the drive belt is covered under warranty per HD/Buell. If you'd like, I can even give you the page number that references this in the HD/Buell warranty manual. Hope this helps. Mike L. '04 XB12R | ||

Just for reference, I looked up the drive belt warranty in the HD/Buell global warranty manual. On page 47 of the current manual (Rev. 9/03) it states: Belts that fail on a vehicle within the two year warranty period due to manufacturing defect are covered parts and labor. Belts that fail due to stone/debris contact, while the vehicle is within the two year warranty, and it is equipped with either the original belt/stone guard, or a Harley-Davidson/Buell accessory belt/stone guard, are also covered parts and labor. Belts that fail due to incorrect installation, misuse, stone damage due to non-Harley-Davidson/Buell stone guards or normal wear and tear are not covered under warranty. The older global warranty manual (Rev. 9/02) stated the same thing on page 44 with the exception of the one year warranty period. 2003 XB belts had a service interval of 15k miles, 2004 XB belts had a service interval of 25k miles. If your bike is still under the factory warranty, has the original belt guards, and your belt has not yet reached it's recommended service interval, there should be no way for any dealer to deny you the warranty repair. If your dealer attempts to deny the repair please have them reference their warranty manual. If they do not have a currenty warranty manual they can access it through hdnet.com in the service section or they can order one through HD using part number 99516-04. Thanks for the warranty info! I have been waiting to replace my belt until I could come up with the extra cash. I think I will take a trip down to the local dealer for some warranty service! Yippy! | ||

I called today and asked if it was covered under warranty. Their first reply was "No, belts are never covered under warranty.". I then asked to talk to the man in person and asked him if he was familiar with the global warranty manual. After a few seconds of silence he said there are occasions in which belts are covered under warranty. He wanted to call me back. He did, and has now arranged to pick up my bike this afternoon and replace the belt under warranty. Thanks again Ray! | ||
