Hmmmm...best way to describe is this - under hard acceleration the motor sounds like theres a loose chain rattling around in there...like high pitched clanks of metal against metal...comes in when I hit the throttle hard and then goes away as she accelerates...dunno...

Anyone else get this? Im on an XB12S

That would be my guess as well.

I'd adjust it to proper tension ( 3/4" ) play cold should be in the ballpark - then drain and refill the primary fliud - sounds like you'll have some small metal bits in the fluid/primary... should be no biggy unless you ran this way for a long period of time....

If it happens as you "whack" the throttle open on hard acceleration, and if it disappears if you let off the throttle a bit - don't close it completely - keep accelerating, just not as hard ... then my guess would be detonation/pinging/spark knock.

JooJoo, if you check the primary chain, it's supposed to be 1/2 to 3/8 inch play...
Cold that is... : )

My 12r is doing the exact same thing! I made a primary adjustment and it went away, until the next hard ride the next day. I am checking the tension again tomorrow so I will keep you posted. Typically mine would only do this in the afternoon heat of Atlanta, not when cold.

Mine makes a noise like marbles rattling around in the crankcase around 3600-3700 rpm (normal Buell motor noise). Sure it's not that? Pinging is slightly louder and goes tick-tick-tick under hard throttle from 3200 to 4200 in really hot weather and/or with low octane fuel. I can usually only hear the primary chain rattle when I hit really big bumps (on both the Buell and the Sportster), but I do check it's adjustment regularly, one thing I noticed is that the primary really needs checking/adjusting more often than the FM suggests during the first 5000 miles.

It's part of the break-in process... You'll likely have to adjust the primary chain tension several times in the first several thousand miles until it's "streched to fit" so to speak... Anyway, that was my experiance with my XB9S... I've got around 9000Mi and I did not need to adjust it the last time I changed out the primary fluid.... Oh yeah, and what Kevinfromwebb said as far as cold play... (I did'nt have my manual with me when I last posted)....Be sure that play is including the high and low spots on the primary...

Opto and new12R,

Thats exactly what im talking about. And yeah, it only happens when the motor is nice and hot. Maybe it is detonation, but thats not good...Im using the right fuel....

Maybe get your ignition timing checked at the next service? If it's out and needs resetting it should be done under warranty. Otherwise they might be nice enough to check it for nothing.
