03 belt needs to be upgraded to a 04-10 sprockets and belt. Airbox needs to be drilled with a hole saw to help it breathe. Oil pump gear needs inspection & its not a bad idea to go ahead & upgrade it. The later model clutch cable is also upgraded, so check the clutch pull to make sure it is smooth.

Switch the airbox to a 04 and up airbox, the 03 makes less power. Don't bother drilling a 03 box

Guell is right, I was wrong. The later models have a better design air box leading to the venturi. Even with the new air box cover there are still gains to be made by adding perforations.

Unless you are going to change out the ECM as well, I [personally] would not recommend doing any more than changing to the 04+ inner airbox cover and removing the rubber "snorkle" in the air intake path on the left side of the frame because it will run really lean and hot.

i.e. - Stick with the stock or performance paper air filters.

These changes though, do smooth out the low end nicely.

As for the belt - there is an updated belt that does not require sprocket changes. This is all I'll be doing with my tire change.

The problem with the original belt is that it is sensitive to twisting (through improper installation) and to reverse loading (hooliganism). Normal riding with good brake technique instead of slowing through downshifts and you ought to be just fine. I don't think that downshifting to to slow these bikes is a good idea anyway because of its' torque and if your back tire bites, you will be on your ass. Ya'll can pile on me for that opinion if you like...
