So I just got an 09 12R a couple weeks ago. It was tough to start, but would start the first time. It would also cut out when giving it gas. Great when warm though. Just put the K&N on and now it takes a couple tries to start it when cold, and periodically when idling, it would sound like it cut out for split second and a PSST sound comes from the airbox and it keeps going. Where do I need to start looking.

Somebody please help.

Just a thought, maybe you over oiled it and fouled a sparkplug.

Its a common problem for first time K&N users to over oil the filter then install it without riding the bike for several days(extra oil settles to the bottom and gets sucked in all at once) then wonder why it runs like shit or fouls plugs.

thanks Ramsey, but the filter made the problem worse. It was there before the filter. My K&N came pre-oiled also. Getting frustrated, and dont want to take it to a stealership. The Harley dealership in Tucson sucks monkey pole.

Sounds like someone botched the fuel map or that you have an injector that is stuck open.

What Greg_e said..,though maybe not "botched" as the term goes...just miscalculated..!

This is from experience..!
It can be as little as 2 value numbers in two cells...it can be as bad as 5 numbers in 5 or 6 cells.

Just depends on what was done to the maps.

Why do people use the K&N filters?
If it's HP...think again (in normal driving..!).

I went K&N so I wouldn't ever have to spend another dime at an HD shop for an air filter.

YMMV,

Your idle relies on the IAC motor to work correctly. How many miles on the bike? You may want to spend the time/money to see someone who can monitor the IAC operation and trouble codes. Otherwise, you will be making lots of guesses that will cost you extra time and money.

7K on the bike for miles. Not a gearhead so i am learning as I go.I have always put K&N's on all my cars and trucks.never thought about putting money in Harleys pocket. But that is a good one. I guess I am going to drop it off so they can check out the maps and possibly reflash the ECM to the latest update?? Am i on the right track????

If your bike is bog standard except for the filter than it is probably running very lean on start up. If you have an aftermarket pipe as well it will be worse.

First thing to do is check that the TPS ect is setup properly as it should be, so visit a dealer/workshop who haas the correct software to check that for you.

If it still persists then maybe you need to improve your fuelling, either with ECMSpy or an aftermarket fueller such as TFi, Powerizer etc. If you are not a 'gearhead' and don't understand how t uswe ECMSPy stay away from it and just use a simpe to fit/use fueller such as Powerizer/TFi instead.

$305.00 to EBR for a race ECM. Plug and play. Best mod I've done to mine.

Absolutely. I've got an XB9 with a K&N and a Buell Race Exhaust on it. It had a piggyback fuel computer, but was still a pain to start. Crank, idle, die. Crank, idle, die. Crank, crank, idle, idle, die.

The colder it got, the worse it was. It'd always start OK, but it felt to me like it was running on startup mixture, then leaning it out ASAP to meet emissions. And would then die.

I put the race ECU on and all is better. It sounds better, starts better, idles solidly from the very beginning, runs smoother, pulls harder, doesn't have the weird "step" in power at 5k from it being underfueled in the 4k RPM range for emissions...

It is absolutely in every way better.

I feel the same about the race ECU on my 1125.
