So I've been looking and looking and looking.

What is the 100% PROPER, and CONFIRMED wiring for the 3phase voltage regulator? I put one on my s1, and so far I've seen 2 different wiring methods.



I fried my old one, and this method did not seem to work... When I purchased the next voltage regulator, it was wired the same exact way I had my first one... NOT at all like this wiring diagram.

1- Ground
2- Stator
3- Positive
4- Stator
5- Stator

This is how I currently have it wired... yet when I rev up, the volts drop to as low as +7v. Which means the stator is eating up power as opposed to producing it...

What is the CORRECT way? I need to make some amps asap.

Well, the wire connections that you have listed are correct for an XB 3-phase regulator BUT it is a question of orientation to make sure which wire represents pin 1.

The schematic is only representative by the look of it and probably drawn that way to avoid crossed wires on the drawing. If you used that to go by you would have the positive output and one AC input crossed.

THis photo shows a partially excavated regulator (from the rear with wires to the left) and the top wire going to the lug on the regulator housing is definitely ground. You can check this with a multimeter to a bare spot on the case to get your orientation right.
You can then see the second wire (AC input from stator) connected to a spot slightly back from that, then the thicker, positive wire between the ground wire and the AC input wire and then the other two phases connected in line with wire #2.

Damnit. So I definitely have it wired correct. Which means my stator is bad. I measured 1.2 ohms between each coil... I have not opened it to see if it smells bad.

So who has a xb stator they can get rid of?

Why are the stator leads giving off 10volts by the way?

Also, why would it be draining the voltage down to 6 volts when I rev?

With the stator disconnected the resistance specs for each of the 3 phases is 0.1 to 0.3 ohms - this will be difficult to get accurately unless you have a pretty reasonable multimeter. Each phase to ground should be infinity.
Again, with the stator disconnected and engine running you should measure 32 to 40 volts AC (approx 16-20 volts AC per 1000rpm) phase to phase.

Now working on the assumption that if you have the regulator with only 5 black wires and no existing connectors to get clues from (and further assuming the order of the wires physically coming out of the regulator could be inconsistent - yes, I know it is a wild arse idea), I measured the one I have here with a Fluke digital multimeter on resistance and found that the 3 AC inputs have a higher resistance measurement to ground compared to the positive DC output (> 20 Mohms).
As I mentioned before the negative DC output/ground is directly connected to the case of the regulator so at least that is easy to identify.

A very rough way to compare but when painted into a corner.......

Yep, there was a bit of time wasted picking that potting out - I used surgical tweezers and so far haven't damaged anything.

It is a work in progress and I haven't taken the final steps to try and get the board out intact.

The board is marked 'TYMPANIUM CORP', 'Made in the USA',
'T1171A' & '0806'.

Alright... so after an hour ride I'm having the same problem I had with my last voltage regulator.


Now its making 16-18 volts across battery terminals....

This causes my HID's to go into protect mode.

Whaaat the hell.

Sigh... I cannot figure it out. now its putting out up to 18 volts....
I have not gotten the same readings twice from this.


First last night it was sucking voltage like crazy... dropping to 6 volts when I would rev. Then I rode it and it was fine for about an hour.

Then all of a sudden my headlight starting shutting off.... which meant the voltage was spiking again. Check it after the ride, 18volt city. I cannot figure this out....

I sold an XB9SX with close to 30k miles that was still on it's original factory shunt regulator.

Glitch? How many miles did you get out of yours before it finally died?

With enough work, you probably could wring a little more life out of a stator by switching to a series regulator... but it probably would not be worth the trouble of messing with. It would be less work to just replace the factory stator every 50,000 miles.

The XB system isn't perfect, but seems "above average" for motorcycle charging systems (where its not remarkable to have something fail at 50k miles or less on nearly all brands).

Glitch? How many miles did you get out of yours before it finally died?
At 20K the first went out, and at 40K the second went out.
I was using the Mobil1 Gear Oil, up until the second went out.
After hearing on here the Mobil1 Gear Oil eats at the wires, I quit using it and went to Formula+, no problems since.
I have well over 60K on the clock, but I can't estimate the actual mileage, because of the speedo sensor was wonkie for a year or two, I have a new one, and no problems since, if it goes bad again I'll install the new one ; )
