I just finished this yesterday. It's built using an Edelbrock 5504 from ebay. That header pipe is not trivial! It's all 409 stainless, except where it clamps on to the header which is machined from 316. I'm debating what coating if any I should apply, and if I should make the chin fairing brackets.

I love the way it sounds. Nice low rumble without any droning when cruising.

What other muffs are suitable donors? I had thought of using 2 different length cherry bombs.

I used a Magnaflow #11148. I copied a GB muffler without the long turnouts, my turnouts are short. (Pic of GB muffler)

I used a Jardine elbow to save fab time. (my muffler)

I have been toying with this idea for a while. I have my Jardine elbow. I was thinking of trying a Borla. Just not sure if Borla makes a compatible muffler or not.

Just a fyi, 409 stainless will rust.

I do mine a bit differently.

I'm aware that the 409 will oxidize. The Edelbrock 5504 muffler is made of 409 so I didn't see a point to making all the rest of it out of a higher grade. I'm planning on coating it with something, I just don't know what yet. I'm open to suggestions.

Using a muffler with a shorter body like the magnaflow, or like D_adams's design allows for much simpler, better flowing bends. The advantage to the longer Edelbrock muffler is that it can use the stock mounting points, and has bulkheads at the factory jackpoints.

How loud are the Magnaflow conversions?

The Magnaflow is a dual 2" glasspack so it is probably louder than the Jardine.

It is about the same as a Buell race muffler, maybe a bit deeper. It is quieter and smoother than a Hawk muffler. I wear ear plugs, more for the wind noise than the exhaust.

I have gotten many compliments on the way it sounds.

I have not had any corrosion problems. but I DO live in Florida, and I do not go near saltwater with my bikes. I didn't even try to polish it. I use a scotchbrite medium pad and scour the muffler and pipes on occasion. I like the "brushed" look.

Buell race muffler is louder than I want, but quieter than a Jardine so maybe I'll think about it some day.

No, it's the other way. The jardine is a definitely louder to me. The one I posted earlier is as loud as a jardine though. The modded magnaflow muffler is quieter.
