I just got my first Buell last week, moved up from my FZ6. It is a 2005 XB12Scg. Anyway it has been a blast riding around, but I have to fix something the last owner did.

For some reason they blacked out the gauge cluster. They left the numbers white so the light shines through them at night, but they painted the needles black as well. I don't ride at night much during the winter but I would like to be able to see how fast/what RPM I am going when I do. I took the cluster apart and sanded the paint off the needles with some fine grit sandpaper; now I have one white needle and one orange.

However, the needles still do not illuminate. Is the black dash panel blocking light that is supposed to get to the needles? I am planning on getting one from XBDashboards anyway, but if there is something else causing my dark needles I would like to fix that first.

SHould be a light under each needle that shines into the base of the needles, they sort of work like a light pipe.

LOL black indicators.

I wonder if alcohol will remove the paint?
I'm pretty sure that acetone will remove the plastic as well as the paint!

It may just be most easy to find another set of gauges to harvest parts.
Have you checked the classifieds?

Yeah I don't know what he was thinking painting the indicators. I tried rubbing alcohol but it didn't take the paint off, so I used sandpaper.

I am going to take it apart again today and see if I can clean it up some more and check the lights under the needles.

I've checked the classifieds but no clusters are up right now; there are some on ebay but I am going to see if I can get it working before buying another one to swap parts from.

Use it to learn about the parts, then if you mess it up you can always get a replacement.
