How many of the discs are you supposed to use? If I left 1 steel plate and 1 friction plate out it seems to fit pretty good. The whole set is way to many, impossible to get the snap ring in.

I ended up with 9 friction discs, sound right?

That doesn't make sense. Not sure why you'd have the extra set of plates.

You should contact EBR and ask. IT MIGHT be that the pack is made up for the slipper clutch?

By the way, the Alto Carbonite clutch is going to last for-freaking-ever! I just opened my clutch on the racebike to check wear (40 races so far plus at least 40 practice and track days) - and it's hardly worn at all, and mine is a SLIPPER.

(last stupid question - you did get instructions to soak the clutch pack before assembly, right?)

I lied - next stupid question - I use synthetic ATF in the slipper clutch with the Alto Carbonite clutch pack - did they give the same recommendation for the Alto Carbonite clutch pack used in the stock clutch?

By the way, I've gotten really good luck in getting answers to email and phone calls to Alto Carbonite (a proud US company too BTW)

In the instructions for the Buell clutch pack, they say:

BUELL & XL 2005+
ALTO PART # 095750CC
Alto # 095750CC KIT CONTENTS:
(8) 095731B185 1-Side Friction, Internally Splined
(8) 095730D150 1-Side Friction, Externally Splined
(1) 095730A185 Friction Plate, Double Side

OK - from the instruction link (above):

quote:

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The friction material should face the back of the drum. Start with an externally splined friction plate with
the lining facing down and the steel side facing up followed by an internally splined friction plate with
the lining facing down and the steel side up. Continue this process making sure each time a plate is installed that you only see the steel side. The last plate to be installed will be the double-sided friction
plate. Reinstall the pressure plate and spring. Finish by adding lubricant.
Once installation is finished ride the motorcycle two or three times to make your final adjustments.
If the Stack Up extends above the basket, remove internally splined plate and one externally splined plate

The box EBR sent me said "for 91+ sportster and big twins"... so maybe the big twins use more clutch discs

I think that Torco is the synthetic that was run in the XBRR. I'm trying the Amsoil ATF. Have run Royal Purple ATF with good results (the Torco worked just fine too - but I'm trying to do the "Amsoil thing")

They actually told me not to use ams over the phone because it synthetic. The torco is a synthetic blend and will hold up a lot better. I asked abou ams oil for the same reason.

Interesting... I might still have the email I got from Alto Carbonite but it was over a year ago. I THINK (always dangerous this early in the AM without coffee) - that they said that any of the new synthetic ATF would be OK and in about 40+ races with full synthetic ATF, I'm amazed at how little wear I'm showing on the plates. (and this is a slipper)

Since E-B-R has been running the Alto Carbonite system in clutches since the first days of the XBRR, I'd certainly go with what they'd recommend - especially since you're using them in a standard clutch.

I'm just very impressed at how well they hold up!

Here it is:

Hello

The Amsoil ATF will work fine, the only problem we have had with the Amsoil ATF is the smell.

It smells like it has burnt-up when in fact it is still in good shape.
