03 xb9r d&d
It started about a month or two ago. Whenever I get about mid throttle, the bike starts coughing until I get to about 6 or 7 grand. Whenever I start it, I have to give it small twist on the throttle. Talked to an old Harley mechanic today and he said that I need to reconfigure the brain on it. I changed the plugs and wires on it and it still didn't help. Should I take my throttle body off and clean it? I'm not really wanting to spend $150 on something that might not fix the problem. Sorry if I sound like a .

D&D are pretty wide open. Perhaps it's just running really lean.
Do you have the original muffler to try that out?

When you changed the plugs out, what did they look like?

No I don't have the original muffler. When I changed the plugs, they were a little dark. Looked pretty normal the miles on them.

TPS reset?

What ECU tune do you have in there? I wouldn't be surprised if it's terribly lean at mid-throttle with the added flow - the ECU doesn't "know" how much air is going through the engine, it just guesses based on what it knows about the engine (stock fuel maps).

An easy way to tell would be to tap the O2 sensor output & watch it while you're riding. Accelerating at mid-throttle, you should be rich (1v or so), and I bet you're way, way lean (0v).

Without a wideband O2 sensor you can't get detailed information, but it'll show you if you're lean of peak, which you shouldn't be under acceleration.

Alternately, if it's been running fine and just started getting weird, you might have a partly clogged fuel injector. Try some Seafoam or such & see if it helps.

The ecu does know what the engine is seeing, based on reading the O2 sensor in the "Learned Fuel" area--not very big on a 03 XB, so my guess is AFV is skewed affecting whole map.

I'm not sure what kind of tune it has. I bought the bike used last year. Do I have to take it to Harley to figure that out? I just don't know a whole lot about EFI. Who remaps the ECM?
