I was looking to see what is involved in the 25,000 mile service for the XB12R, and it says to replace the belt, sprockets and idler pulley. The belt was already replaced under warranty at 10,000 miles due to breakage, so that's a no brainer. But I was wondering if the sprockets & idler pulley replacements are "must do" items. Visually, they both appear in perfect condition still (I'm very gentle on this bike) but maybe those with more experience can offer advice? Thanks!

Replace? nope.
Inspect and adjust if necessary I think.

In other words, ignore and ride.

No need to worry about any of it. The idler is due to the bearings in the wheel, if they are good don't worry about it.

I strongly disagree. My 04 had its original belt and I didnt replace it or the idler pulley. At 30,000 miles 12 teeth was missing on my belt while on a ride. I had to ride it home. I replaced the belt over that winter and at 32,000 my tranny took a dump without a doubt from the slippage caused by missing those teeth and the front sprocket having nothing to grab on. After the belt messed up I could always hear a bearing noise but just ran it until it went. On the newer belts they are replace it when it needs it. It is reccomened for a reason. Spend the 150 on a new belt (cant remember the pulley cost) and put them up as spares but do it. The next belt you get will not have an interval for replacement. I now have a bike down stairs that needs the cases split to find out what damage I have done and if the cases are any good.

I wouldn't replace the sprockets or pulley unless you see some damage.

I bought and installed a new belt for the Uly at about 19k miles, coiled up the old one like a band saw blade, and carry it in a side bag.

My M2 was at close to 30k when I sold it with the original belt (which was adjusted wrong for a while, to the point where it crushed the 5th gear drive assembly needle bearings).

My 9sx was at 25k or something, again with original belt and not a hint of problems. I had a spare idler pulley I bought off of a 9sx that was parted out at 5k miles, and it sat on a shelf with each tire change... because I could find no problems with the original idler bearings.

I finally just sold it to CitySlicker, who really DID need it, because he was doing his dirty bike thing with his 9sx (which did damage his bearings and the hard coating on his idler). So I'd say the idler can be damaged, but usually isn't.

what is that coating on the idler? seems to hold up really well.
