Has anyone actually found and installed tapered steering neck bearings on their XB that are sealed correctly and fit nicely? I have seen only a few offered online but am not sure that they are advertized correctly. Hmmm? | ||

I don't think you can seal the timkin style bearings in the same way. That's why you used to have to repack and adjust them over and over. They did last a long time though. | ||

So, I know about the seal situation when going to tapered bearings and would like to buy a tapered bearing kit that is designed well. Pictures of your experience would be great!! | ||

My experience with timkin bearings is from my old ironhead's steering neck. I don't think anyone offers a kit to retrofit them to an XB. | ||

I can't speak from personal experience but they are available from all balls for the uly and other xbs as well. A guy over at ADV rider has them installed and likes them. I am going that route soon myself. He claims they are better as far as feel. He also says to not torque them more then 15ft/lbs. I have had them in every beemer I ever owned and they last forever. | ||

They look like the same bearings as used for the tubers ,but with extra seals added to them! | ||

briefly explain the difference between the bearings being discussed here A tapered bearing uses an assembly of conical rollers (set in inner and outer races that are essentially sections of a cone). A ball bearing in contrast uses spherical balls set inside an inner and outer race that are sections of a cylinder. A ball bearing is designed to handle loads effectively from one direction for the most part: radially. The cone geometry means a tapered roller bearing can handle both radial and axial loads. They also "roll" more reliably and thus wear less in general. | ||

They look like the same bearings as used for the tubers ,but with extra seals added to them! They also have front and rear wheel bearings with some outer seals as well. Edit - I take that back. Says wheel bearing and seal kit, but it doesn't list any extra seals in the package. I initially thought it came with dust caps. (Message edited by Buewulf on October 07, 2011) |
