Light comes on at about .8 gallons remaining, so you can do the math based on your fuel economy.

Just to make it easy and give you a little head room, say half a gallon. If you get 50mpg, you can go 25 miles. 60mpg, 30 miles, 75mpg - 37.5 miles.

Funny you should ask. I took yesterday off and went for a long ride on my 08 XT. I also ran completely out of gas 34 miles after the light came on. I was in unfamiliar territory (NE Iowa) and headed towards Caledonia, MN but came up 4 miles short. Fortunately I was going fast enough to coast into a wood stave company and there was a guy in the shop. Turns out he likes bikes and was kind enough to give me enough gas to get to town and would not take a dime for it. Love that small town hospitality!

I really thought I could make it to the gas station because I ran 39 miles last summer after the light came on and at that point, it held 4.3 gallons. My mileage seems to vary a lot, depending on speed, temp and mostly my mood!

The worse thing you can do to an electronic fuel pump is run it out of gas. It puts a strain on the entire pressure system/fuel delivery. Just my .02

Boliver, yes I agree with you and it was due to poor planning on my part. It was the first time I have run it completely dry and hopefully the last. I was planning to fill up in Lansing, IA that day before heading back towards home. When I got there, I realized that their only gas station (I think) does not sell Premium. So I figured towns in that area really can't be that far apart, right? Wrong. Thanks.

I really don't know, I've never run mine dry; but when that light comes on I run for the nearest gas station!

In my XB9SX the light beams bright with about half a gallon of fuel remaining, the 9 gets about 42 MPG, so about 21 miles?
