Hi Gang. I am new to the Buell scene and expect to visit this site often. I just hit 1000 miles on '03 XB9R and have loved every mile of it. However, my right forearm starts going numb after only 20 miles. When I start going on longer rides I suspect this will be an issue. Is there any kind of throttle lock (cruise control) that can be added? Also, I just ordered the Race Kit from my dealer. Is that the way to go or should I opt for store credit and look for an after market set-up? I appreciate your help!!

i think the numbness is from the vibration
i added bikewerks anti vibration bar ends n it seemd to postpone the numbness a little but it still happens after about 40 miles
the race kit is junk
sounds better than stock but thats about all
drummer or d&d are the best cans ive came across but there are like 10 options or so now
i tryed to pirate the throttle lock off an 82 honda
just ended up messing up my grip
there is a throttle master dealey that lets u use the palm of your hand to hold the throttle but i dunno how good it works or how it affects grip

Thanks 420. I've tried the throttle master dealy and it didn't really help. It offered a few different options on hand position but not a great solution. At only 1000 miles, should I be concerned about warranty if I choose an aftermarket pipe?

just keep the stock one n put it back on if u ever need warranty work
its really a dealer call
they can void the warranty
but most dont i guess

Whether you need to keep the aftermarket exhaust on or not is really a matter of:
1. How reliant are you on your dealer?
2. What does your dealer tell you about aftermarket pipes and warranty.

There are horror stories about dealers saying that an aftermarket pipe voids the entire warranty (not true, but makes life harder) and others who "get it" and understand that it has nothing to do with 99% of the warranty issues you MAY experience on your bike.

As far as the "Race Kit" vs. "The Rest Of The World" - it really is a matter of opinion. My friend races an XB with the Race Kit and does quite well. I think that the exhaust debate is really answered by what kind of rider you are. If you can ride/compensate for the torque curve that your exhaust decision creates for you - then go with it.

I personally had a D&D for a long time on my XB and did just fine on the track with it, also - no problems riding the twisties with it.

It is really a matter of personal preference. If you are an experienced rider and can determine how the various Dyno charts from the exhaust options affect your riding style and the bike - the go for it. Me, personally, I will never be able to tell the difference between the minimal gains/losses that the various exhaust options provide, so go with what makes you happy.

Not trying to be rude, just had a few beers tonight and being honest.

I havent seen the dedication to the brand anywhere else on the web, if you come here trying to push a product - you better have the numbers to back it up - else it wont fly here.

Though you can order the Throttlemeister direct from the manufacturer Dave up in Appleton can get you one and apply the Badweb discount of 10%.

Dave can get damn near anything you need for your Buell.

I have the same problem -- hands go numb after about 35-40 miles. Unfortunately, I have the CRG barend mirrors, so is there any sort of throttle lock that would work for me, besides the palm paddle thingie?

I found this on the web "Buy a 1" diameter 3/16" rubber o-ring at your hardware store in the plumbing section. When you want to lock your throttle, put it between your bar end weight and your throttle grip. Otherwise roll it onto the bar end weight. You might need one or two 7/8" diameter 1/8" rubber o-rings also. If you don't have bar end weights, you can use a 1 ½" o-ring between the throttle grip and the switch housing. "

Alternately there is a thumb operated throttle lock that is installed between the grip and the switch housing, black plastic and available at many sport bike shops for about $20-25. Very functional accessory.

Quite possible that Dave can source some of those as well.

I was worried about the riding position when buying my 9R after riding my M2 for 4 years, but I am more comfortable on the XB. I do not feel any sort of numbness even after two hours of riding.

I am not trying to sound stupid but did you try altering your riding position? As I have gotten older, I have learned to pay attention to stupid things like posture after throwing my back out more than a few times leaning over to wash my face in the sink.

I recently got a 9R, and got a numb right hand after 30min or more. I ordered the throttlemeister and traction grips from DaveS. I first put on just the throttlemeister to see if the bar end weights helped the vibes, only slightly. Then I added the traction grips which help the vibes a little but are just more comfortable overall due to larger diameter and convex shape. On longer rides I still get a numb right hand but only at certain revs at certain speeds. That's when you find a straight road, lock the throttle for a minute or two and shake off the numbness. The only riding position changes I can seem to make are to slide back and sit wide or slide forward and hug the tank. Neither seems to affect the hands.

Did you have to cut the ends out of your traction grips to install the Throttlemeister? I would assume you did as they are sealed at the ends with no hole for barends. Did this turn out OK?

I have both the traction grips and the TM, and I'm going to install the latter this weekend. Just wanted to see how it turned out for you.

Do you lock your elbows?

There is the aftermarket triple clamp that someone I know uses, and loves it. It is not cheap tough.

I have a 12S, and had the numbness. That was a different riding position than I had been used to in the past. Even when I changed to the clip on style bars that American Sport Bike offers, the numbness hasn't changed. I've been running the Traction grips as well, on both sets of bars. As I said before, I am running the CRG bar-end mirrors, so can't use a throttlemeister, and yes, I did have to cut the ends off the grips to use the CRGs also...

I've been runing the same thing on the MaDeuece for 3 years . . . . .took 30 minutes (including beverage break) and a little modification to the product, but it works great, is unobtrusive, and cheap!

I cot off the 90 degree turn on the bottom that slides over the honda/yamaha/kaw/suzi throttle cable, (which is what keeps it from rotating) and drilled a hole for a small machine screw that fits into a recess on the bottom of the thottle housing . . . . .

I'd suggest the Heli bar conversion on an R. Made an unbelievable difference. I ride to work 50 miles one way, and I get NO wrist/shoulder/elbow pain any longer.

I have had a Vista cruse cruse control on all of my bikes. Cheap and functional. Might take some fitting tho.

MY R1100S vibes a bit and I use a Throttle Rockser. In fact both my Triumph and my beemer have one. Best $10 I've spent.

Chris: Yes I had to cut the ends off. I used a utility knife and carefully cut it at the peak of the end flare...if that makes any sense. That way the end of the rubber is the same diameter as the throttlemeister. Once you get most of it cut out, a scissors makes a cleaner cut to the raw rubber end than the knife. Plus there are some hard white plastic things in there from the logo that make it more difficult than it needs to be. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it...

Leeaw: I've tried all positions, I try not to lock the elbows but I think generally they end up that way. I've thought about the triple clamp but don't want to spend the money or change the position (it's not going to change the vibration). Maybe I sounded like I was complaining but I wasn't. I don't mind a little vibration, because my last bike did it to me in a high frequency buzzy way and I rode for 4 years that way. I'm getting used to the "character" of the bike and the pluses far outweigh the minuses.}

THe triple trees made a difference from a vibration perspective because the stock TT had me hunched over more wherein I placed a LOT more weight/pressure on the clip-ons. This in turn led to tighter gripping which leads (since now I'm a stressed member) the absorption of MUCH more vibration.

So while the Heli's didn't directly reduce and vibration as a source, it sure as hell got rid of it thanks to riding position. I can ride for hours now and still lay on the tank/over in the twisties.

It's a very nice setup. I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

I can't wait to combine it with the Throttlemiester.

Bark: Yeah, that does make sense, the engineer in me agrees. I do have a lot more weight on the bars than with my past bike due to geometry. I know there is another thread around about those triple trees so I can lookup supplier and price. We'll see about it in the future maybe.

Kid: You've come to the right place! I researched these boards a lot which helped me decide to buy an XB. Now I try to provide as much help as I can to give back to the community. This is definitely the largest knowledge base of Buell info around.
