So I replaced the headers on my XB9R and as I start to put the new headers on one of the bolts snapped inside the Cylinder head.

Got bolt extractors and the extractor itself broke inside the hole also. So we start to drill out the extractor and the drill bit broke in there as well. So now I had a hole with a bolt, bolt extractor and a drill bit stuck in the hole.

We drilled out the hole to get all the crap out, but now the hole is huge and the bolt would never fit.

We had to thread the inside of the hole. I bought this titanium rod and threaded the rod and threaded it into the hole. Then Drilled a hole into the titanium rod and threaded the inside of that hole and put the header bolt back in.

Craziest thing I ever went through, I was getting ready to replace the cylinder head.

Yo Matt,

If you are interested in what my straight pipe is gonna look like I took some pics of the bigsherms to the delray muffler house and tommorow one of the guys up there (cool as hell) is gonna build me a custom one based on the pics. If you want we can ride up together.

You're gonna lose a lot of power with the straight pipe...A LOT! My race can fell off in Orlando on the 4th. I've been riding around with just the headers. Sounds awesome, but it's not worth the loss of power. I have a D&D on the way.

Why you talkin smack Matt? You know I'm the one that broke the bolt : )

Behind a desk all week that sucks dude. Dave the way I figure it once the straight pipe is on, Which is not gonna be that straight hopefully to create at least some back pressure I am gonna bring it down to blais cycle to have them dyno and powercommander run it. Tune the a/f mix every 250 rpm.

Like I told matt when i say him at pompano hardly i just have a physcological block that does not allow me to pay 500 dollars for a tin can with baffles. I would rather have a custom pipe made for 40$ and then have the powercommander tuned and for the 500. Plus the guys up at delray muffler house are cool as , so in the future if anything breaks or anything i can jsut bring it back to them. I told him the engine vibrates and that he would have to overbuild the brakets and he instantly knew what i was talking about. He has a harley.

Alright, Dave broke the bolt on my headers.

Lesson learned:
Don't let anyone touch your SH*T! : )

Corrupter:

I don't want to start a religious debate here, but there's a little more science to exhaust design and tuning that you're giving the engineers credit for, especially on a multi-cylinder vehicle; balancing noise (federal and state mandates, mind you) with performance just isn't as easy as it sounds.

If it was just as easy as bolting on a $40 pipe and hacking an ECU program, we'd all be running around with cherry bombs on our bikes.

The reality is that pulse reversion, scavenging, back pressure and exhaust temperatures are all extremely important when TUNING FOR OVERALL PERFORMANCE.

You are (guaranteed) going to lose low-end torque with a straight pipe, irregardless of how much PCIII programming you're going to do.

You're also going to lose scavenging capabilities (which is directly mapped to cam profile/overlap) which will potentially increase cylinder head temperature which...will require more fuel to avoid a lean which... ; ) You get the picture.

I'm sure you know all this and I'm not meaning to be argumentative (and I don't like paying $400+ for a "muffler," either) but reducing these arguments to the levels you did are very abstract and don't take into consideration many variables.

If a straight pipe works for you and you don't mind the loss in power (at specific points in the torque curve) that accompanies the gain in sound, fantastic!

However, just as we have D&D, Drummer, Sebring, Race, Force, etc., there are obvious trade-offs with each and a straight pipe does NOT give the best overall performance. Most race bikes don't use straight pipes...

Just my feedback/opinion.

Ever hear of a time sert? Its like a heli-coil but 10 times better. But it sounds like you got it under control.

We were going to use the heli-coil but could not find the size we needed, and some places didn't even know what a heli-coil was.

I think the way we got it was the best resolution for the situation.

Yeah, Dave broke the bolt...but that bolt was shot...along with the other 3 bolts that hold them on. No way that bolt would have stood up to the torque specs in the book.

Corrupter, I would have to agree with Bn'B about the science behind it but, if you insist on this (Big Sherms pipe looks cool!!!) I think you will do better with the low down tq/hp if you buy some baffles the size of the pipe you're using to get at least a little back-pressure. JP Cycles has them in different sizes........1 3/4", 2" etc..........Odie

Guys, that pipe in my profile was version 2, I think, and the ones I have now are about version 6! I have some restrictors in the duals to provide a little backpressure- basically they block the openings to the same diameter as the headpipes. Can't tell any loss in bottom end, and it seems an increase on top. Still wheelies just as easily, at as low an rpm as with stock.

You're right about it losing power with no can at all, and the first duals I made without restrictors did the same. The single pipe had no internals, and did lose a little on the bottom, not much, with an increase on top. The single pipe was by far the loudest creation, all the noise came out the left. I must have shattered the eardrums of a limo full of girls on my left at the ROT rally in Austin, TX last year with that one.
